When did you load the XP SP3 update?  If you find a solution, please let me

know.  If none is found, I guess I will pay a VMWare tech to tell me the

answer; if I do, I will gladly share if we find a solution.  Thanks much for

at last confirming my problem.

Damon,

The following fixed my problem:

While in VM Fusion, click on the tab at top called "Virtual Machine". Then,

while holding down the shift key (to reboot in safe mode), click on "Restart

Guest".  Apparently this clears the caches which is what is causing the

problem in the first place.  I don't really understand it, but I tried it

after seeing a thread on www.macfixit.com stating a similar problem.  This

worked for me; hope it works for you too.  Good Luck!

udev is automatically adding a new ethernet device when you make the clone. This is because the MAC address changes when you clone a VM. To fix this, just edit /etc/udev/rules.d/##-persistent-net.rules and

      1) delete the old entry:

      SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="?", ATTR=="00:50:56:AA:AA:AA", ATTR=="1", KERNEL=="eth*", NAME="eth0"

      2) change name of new entry:

      SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTR=="00:50:56:BB:BB:BB", ATTR=="1", KERNEL=="eth", NAME="eth1"

      to

      SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="?", ATTR=="00:50:56:BB:BB:BB", ATTR=="1", KERNEL=="eth", NAME="eth0"

      3) reboot

Windows Guest defrag utility - for VSphere, ESXi, Version 5

Is there a recommended solution for defragging disks on Windows guests in this type of environment? --- VSphere, ESXi, Version 5, using iSCSI SAN environment (both RDM and LUN to LUN utilized), Windows W2k3, W2k8 R2 guests

I have tested PerfectDisk and Diskeeper but this was using Local disk in a test environment.

I wish there was an update to Winternals Defrag mgr, but MS took over and did away with this cost effective util long ago.

      Updates:

As of 6/2011 Windows guest VMs require disk defragmentation, regardless of brand of iSCSI SAN. Diskeeper and/or Perfectdisk. Windows guests still write in NTFS and will require defragmentation to organize the disk clusters and decrease I/O read/writes.

6/2012:  Dell/Equallogic SANs - Do not use a Windows Guest Defragmentation utility if you use SAN Thin Provisioning unless you have the latest firmware (released in early 2012) for older model SANs, (PS6000, PS6500 and older).

      That's pretty kind of you.

Shared us so detail article about resize partition.

But, I have to say that I'd like to use 3rd software to finish this operation--Partition Manager.

It is the best software I think and it is free for use.

I just share my idea with you all.

      And thank you again.

Re: 3.5 ESX to ESXi 4.1 issues with HP c3000 blade chassis and iSCSI

So I've got the 2nd interconnect bay working with info i've got working through searching the web! Here is what happened. When I took over the IT position at my company the C3000 and EMC SAN were already in place and configured and I had no documentation or explanation of the install, to be honest I had no clue how the setup worked anyway. In moving to the new SAN (and asking a lot of questions) I found out the following:

      1. The X-Connect ports on both interconnect bays (17 and 18) where in separate VLANS (17 was in the default, and 18 was in the iSCSI VLAN). They also were not in a Trunk group. So i moved them to the default VLAN, added them to the 1st Trunk group. I then turned on VLAN tagging and moved them both to the default VLAN and the iSCSI VLAN so that they could transfer traffic between the two bays on those two VLANS. This now allows my ESX blades to see any iSCSI connections on the 2nd interconnect bay.

      2. Ports are hard wired to the individualize bays and cannot be changed.

      3. For true redundancy I would have to use one of the Mezzanie slots NICs on the iSCSI network. This would allow the 1st interconnect bay to fail and iSCSI traffic to still flow through the 2nd interconnect bay.

      4. Only the two on board ports have a separate iSCSI offload engine. The two  NICs in the mezzanine do not include the iSCSI offload engine and will more than likely need to be set as either iSCSI or regular net traffic (still researching this).  This is different than the onboard NICS which appear to be able to handle both at the same time. In ESX 3.5 the onboard NICs show up as 2 MAC address/VMNICS, but they show up as 4 MAC address in the Onboard Admin for the C3000. The 2nd set is labeled iSCSI so I assume that once iSCSI traffic hits the NICs the offload engine takes care of it while regular traffic flows through the NIC.

      Hi,

Sorry but your comms guys are wrong about what OSPF is designed to do. It's not there to change the default gateway of a desktop or server. Use HSRP if you want to do that. OSPF is there to find the optimal/only path for a router.

You can potentially use a "default originate" but it's not intended for guest servers to learn defaults routes that way.

      Слишком много ограничений. НДС берется.

VM Performance problems - 100% CPU

      Hi

We have a very large VSphere enviroment used for development, on this enviroment we have several build machines (windows and unix) both connected to a sourcecontrol system. Of late we've have hand problems with VM's needing to be restarted as they've been sitting there with 100% CPU, the process taking up all the CPU is rundll32.exe on the windows boxes.

I'm really not sure what do looking at to asertain the problem, any guidance would be really appreciated. When the VM is restarted the VM is fine and everything returns back to normal.

Here you can find the code of the scripts I published on the vmutils blog.

This place has better functionality for questions/discussions so I will try to keep them here. However, if you don't have a communities account you can post your question on the blog (doesn't require account).

I suggest you run "# Set-ExecutionPolicy bypass" in the PowerCLI shell before using the scripts to avoid having to answer questions every time you use them. For more info see this and this

      vmware-vdiskmanager.exe -d corrupted several vmdks

      0
      0

      vmware-vdiskmanager.exe -d corrupted at least 8 of 39 vmdks.

I defragmented my vmdks for the first time, with this command to be exact

      set VMDKHOME=M:\My Virtual Machines
      cd "%VMDKHOME%"
      M:
      FOR /F "tokens=*" %%G IN ('DIR /B /A /S *.vmdk') DO vmware-vdiskmanager.exe -d "%%G"

on 39 vmdks. I let the defragmentation finish in all instances and never canceled it mid-process. Now so far five of the vmdks that were defragmented have shown to have been corrupted so that they won't boot.

Only x64 vmdks were corrupted, but it may have been a coincidence.

The corruption is fairly small, a couple of dozen files it seems, so the vmdks with Windows 2000 and up have been fixable with sfc, some of then required only a

      startrep
      sfc /scannow /offbootdir=d:\ /offwindir=d:\windows

and some required additional help as vital systems files were corrupted in %windir%\winsxs too, which this sfc helper tool http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/ar/w7itprogeneral/thread/1faec0b5-cb63-44d2-b70c-cb4461ca007b takes care of.

Two Server 2008 R2 x64 could not load the vmdk at all, but could be started again after recreating the vmdk with vmware-vdiskmanager.exe -r -t.

      I use VMWare Workstation 7.1.3 build-324285 in Windows 7 x64.

How can vmware-vdiskmanager.exe -d be so unreliable? A defragmenter should go to greath lengths to never corrupt data no matter what happens.
