The course work for the vSphere 5.x Design Workshop is virtually the same, just be aware of the new features and how they impact design/tradeoffs/etc.

I tread lightly about what I say about exam experiences but I will say if you have you course materials from 4.x then you should be okay.

I am happy to report success!!

It turned out that some of the VM's in the NS-3 cluster had what appears to be 'corrupt' disks. Removed them from the VM config and bingo!

Thank you very much for all your assistance. The result is exactly what I was looking for..and I expect others will find it extremely useful as well.

All the best!

View 5 Linked clones fail to get DHCP IP

0
0

Hello all,

  I'm running a small vmware view 5 environment here on 3 esxi hosts.  Each of these hosts has a few nics which are zoned for a specific VLAN which has a range of DHCP addresses we want to use for our VDI environment.  The problem I am running into is that when I create a linked clone pool of about 20 VMs, half of them get IP addresses in the DHCP range and half of them get a 169.254.xxx.xxx IP (which is bogus) and does not have any internet connectivity, causing the provisioning process to be stuck in the "customizing" stage forever and eventually the connection server gives up because it can't reach the VM.  I am able to solve this by manually refreshing each of the clones which does not work, however sometimes I need to do 2 or 3 refreshes before it works.  Does anyone have any insight into why this might be happening?  I already know the following:

-best practices say to do a ipconfig /release on the clone master before you power off/ snapshot for the baseline.  I have done this.

-DHCP range has more than enough addresses (over 100, only 20 clones)

-All the hosts can reach the subnet in question, I have gotten VMs with connectivity to this subnet and migrated it to every VM to ensure it still has internet connectivity.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Ok. Then as you mentioned, copy/paste the entire VM folder is the method (easiest).

USB devices is not mounted in VMware vSphere 5

Hi All,

I have been trying in vain to get an 8GB Kingston USB  pen formated in Fat32 to be mounted in ESXi.

I have turned off the USB arbitration service and unplugged and then replugged the USB device.

lsusb lists the USB as follows:

Bus 01 Device 04: ID 0951:1613 Kingston Technology DataTraveler 8GB Pen Drive

ls -al /vmfs/devices/disks lists the USB as well::

-rw-------    1 root     root         8017412096 Feb 29 15:51 mpx.vmhba38:C0:T0:L0
-rw-------    1 root     root         8015314944 Feb 29 15:51 mpx.vmhba38:C0:T0:L0:1

However, it does not exist in /vmfs/volumes as "No Name"

running esxcfg-mpath -l returns the following:

usb.vmhba38-usb.0:0-mpx.vmhba38:C0:T0:L0
   Runtime Name: vmhba38:C0:T0:L0
   Device: mpx.vmhba38:C0:T0:L0
   Device Display Name: Local USB Direct-Access (mpx.vmhba38:C0:T0:L0)
   Adapter: vmhba38 Channel: 0 Target: 0 LUN: 0
   Adapter Identifier: usb.vmhba38
   Target Identifier: usb.0:0
   Plugin: NMP
   State: active
   Transport: usb

Is this a known problem and is there a work-around?

Also, I cannot seem to access the CD-ROM as well. esxcfg-mpath -l returns:

sata.vmhba0-sata.0:0-mpx.vmhba0:C0:T0:L0
   Runtime Name: vmhba0:C0:T0:L0
   Device: mpx.vmhba0:C0:T0:L0
   Device Display Name: Local TEAC CD-ROM (mpx.vmhba0:C0:T0:L0)
   Adapter: vmhba0 Channel: 0 Target: 0 LUN: 0
   Adapter Identifier: sata.vmhba0
   Target Identifier: sata.0:0
   Plugin: NMP
   State: active
   Transport: sata

I load the iso9669 module but when I run /sbin/vsish -e set /vmkModules/iso9660/mount mpx.vmhba0:C0:T0:L0  I get the following error:

VSISHCmdSet():Set failed: Not supported
Error: Error in command set: Not supported

I read here (http://communities.vmware.com/message/1698234) that you have to set usb mode in BIOS to USB 1.1. Is this correct?

Thanks in advance,

Vlad

So, the NIC that I have assigned to the management interface can only be used for management traffic then? Is the next step to add another NIC to my ESXi server, and then configure that one to route traffic to/from my nested VMs?

Welcome to the commnunity...

Are you saying you have created a data drive (lets say E:) to 500 GB and you want to decrease it to 300 GB and make the disk as Think Provisioned?

if yes,

Option 1 : if you dont have more data on the disk and if you have space on datastore create a new disk of 300GB , use robocopy to copy/move the files to new drive and later delete the drive of 500Gb

Option 2: Use VMware Converter and do Volume based cloning to change the disk size to 300 GB and import it as a new VM (http://www.vmware.com/pdf/convsa_50_guide.pdf)

Hi,

Have you configured the Virtual Machine port group? If yes, are you able to ping default gateway 192.168.1.1?

Provide the screenshot of your Network to know more about your config.

Unable to connect Eaton IPM to vCenter 5 (login failure)

I have two sites each covered by an Eaton UPS.

First site has two vSphere 5 hosts forming a DRS/HA cluster, second site one vSphere 5 host. All managed by the same virtualized vCenter server running in the cluster.

After installing IPM I am unable to make it login to vCenter. It actually does install the plugin, but after that the log shows "Error on the VMware connection" once a minute. Details are "Host 'vcenter': cannot complete login due to an incorrect user name or password".

In the vCenter log i have

2012-02-28T16:35:52.947+01:00 [03452 info 'Default' opID=74ff386e] [VpxLRO] -- ERROR task-internal-4524 -- -- vim.SessionManager.login: vim.fault.InvalidLogin:
--> Result:
--> (vim.fault.InvalidLogin) {
--> dynamicType = <unset>,
--> faultCause = (vmodl.MethodFault) null,
--> msg = "",
--> }
--> Args:
-->
--> Arg userName:
--> "domain\domainadmin"
--> Arg password:
--> (not shown)
-->
--> Arg locale:
-->

I have tried several accounts that I know for a fact works with vCenter, in the form of USERNAME, SERVERNAME\USERNAME and DOMAIN\USERNAME.

Any help will be appreciated.

Cannot configure Windows 2003 VM Networking

0

Hi:

       I did fiinally get the Windows 2003 Disk 1 to boot up so installing this server did not require mounting the disk under Win2K abd running setup.

Would not have worked anyway since you can't upgrade  Win 2K to 2003 server anyway.

    Be that as it may I can't configure the server networking.  I fooled around with the Virtual Network Editor but I messed up out of ignorance I guess and had to restore the defaults so evem Windows XP could get connectivity.

    I've attached a screenshot and was wondering if anybody could help me.  I think the problem may be specific to the      2003 server as 2008 Server R2 has no problems      with the default network settings (NAT)
