Any chance you could share these commands that helped you diagnose the issue? We have a similar problem and it would be good to know if we have a similar backend issue.

Thanks,

Brian

Licenses for ESX/ESXi in vSphere 4 are based on physical CPU - so if you have 4 physical cpus in you host you will need 4 licenses - there is no vRAM component in vSphere 4

I completely agree with this.

The license viewing screen is a HUGE step backwards.

Seems like you are trying to be too 'fancy'.

Plain HTML is just fine.

Ok, I see what your saying.  You can try loading the ntuser.dat file into the registry or simply just delete it and let them re create it based on the whats in the base image.

1. The datstore1 is 500GB.The LUN1 size of this is 500GB.Here 2-3 VM are running and it is heavily loaded and surley will exaust this space in future. The datstore2 is mapped with lun2 of 500GB.It has space free in it.My question is to borrow from datstore2 to datstore1.

3. We have created Lun3 with 1.95TB hence datatore3.It doesn't allow to add more than that.My dtastore is also 1.95TB.This would consists of database.Wondering how to have LUN size more than 2TB in turn single datastore than 2TB.How to achieve that?

Is it best practice to have one datstoore per LUN?What about vmotion and FT.Does the vm1 within the datstore will be able to move or can it be moved in other datstore as well. How about HA when any ESX machine goes down.

Sushil

In additon to what Linjo has said I have also seen this happen when a VM gets locked up or goes into a not responding state.  I'm curious if you were to RDP and try to login as the user on the disconnected session if it would allow you.

how logical processors are calculated in vmware

When i see through Vcenter console for below  two hosts:

first host through vcenter console found  Dell R900 it has 4 physical CPU sockets each socket supports 6 cores. The CPU Socket is Intel Xeon x7640 it shows 24 logical processors.

In Second Host through vcenter console found  Dell R910 it has 4 physical CPU sockets each socket supports 6 cores. The CPU Socket is Intel Xeon x7540 it shows 48 logical processors.

why there is difference in logical processors. and how it was calculated.

DRS Question

Is there anyone who can tell me one thing that DRS is doing the Load Balancing by default or not like if i have two hosts and on one Host 5 Machines are Running and on the another 1 Machine is running only then it will try to migrate the 2 machines to the another host or not? Assuming all the settings are same in the Virtual Machines (Like Hardware and Software).

Hi,

If your vCenter is in Win 2008 R2 then check in the following location.

You should have these folders related to OS or else you have to create the same with the same procedure mention above

ESXI stuck on ipmi_si_drv, SuperMicro S6036T-3R

I bought a Supermicro S6036T-3R right off of the VMware ESXI 5.0 HCL.

On boot up of the disk it gets stuck at ipmi_si_drv.

I've tried turning on/off IPMI with no luck and I've read a lot of issues with this regarding older versions of ESXI but nothing helpful.

There is no IPMI module installed nor is there anyway beyond the BIOS to disable it.

Running the recomended BIOS too, 2.0C.

Thanks

1) Unless you provisioned your virtual disks as thin disks you should not run out of space on the VMFS datastore because by default the virtual disk files (VMDK) are created as the full size so in other words when you create an 8- GB disk an 80 GB vmdk file is created. The case of the thin disk provisioning a vmdk is created and will grow to the full size of the virtual disk - the bigger concern on storage is not saturating the paths to storage or staurating the LUN

2) Are you running vSphere 4 or vSphere 5 - if it is vSphere 5 the maximum zive of VMFS datastore is now 64 TB but the virtual disk is still capped at the 2 TB -512 B

Yes best practice is to have a single VMFS datastore per LUN - with vmotion as long as both hosts can see the the datastore vmotion is possible as long as the other vmotion requirements are met.

Since FT tolerance requires two datastore this is not an issue

Using storage votion yoou would be able to move the VM between the datastores while it is running

Like vmotion as long as both ESXi hosts can see the datastore HA will work

What server and RAID controller are you using? You may be able to carve out a small partitation for the VMware installation and allocate the rest for a datastore(s).

With most controllers you can - but I don't see why you would.

If you're happy to just stick it on the hard disk, you don't need to carve out anything, just let ESXi do its thing and share the disks.

If you want the various flexibility options, use a flash drive.

Trying to Spend Money on VMware proves difficult

My Situation:

My boss wants to get a quote on VMware software licenses in order to set up a VMware teaching lab for a California community college.

The class will be a full 16 to 18 week semester (3 to 4 hours per week) covering the basics of VMware, with exams, labs, and homework. We are not planning the class to be "certificate complient" but we are looking into becomming a VMware academic partner in the future.

The Instructor (me) is familier with the principals of VSphere and will continue to train over the summer (I have installed and used workstation, esxi hypervisor, and of course vSphere client but I am in need of further training)

The Lab:

16 students will work in pairs on 8 "stations". Each station has the following setup:

1 dell Optiplex 760 (Core 2 Duo e8400 processor) 8GB Ram

2 dell Poweredge T110 (Xeon X3430) 16GB Ram (Both servers and desktop conneted via usb KVM switch)

All systems have EZDock sata docking stations (we have plenty of extra hard drives)

All systems have 2 physical giabit ethernet ports.

Gigabit switches with ports enouth for all systems.

My boss wants to purchase a QNAP TS-459 Pro with enough drives to support the system.

My Issue:

I called VMware pre-sales support. They were nice, and said that they will look into the software requirements (The person I spoke with, I think his name was "Rudy" suggested the VSphere "Essentials" kit would be a good starting point. I am not sure about this. What is in the Essentials kit. Licenses for esxi hosts? Workstation licenses? Vcenter server licenses?

I called Dell, they are a national VMware distributer and should be able to offer us academic pricing. Again, they were nice, but I am running out of time and I need to see how much this software will cost so we can plan accordingly.

Should I just purchase (per station)

One workstation license

One Vcenter server license

Any number of esxi licenses. (The two servers could each have one esxi host running and any number of vms. The desktop, I assume, could be setup with workstation, and have VM server domain controller, VM Vcenter server, VM production machines, VM sql server ect.

I am not sure, and I need some ballpark figure in order to at least start the purchas funding request.

Will it cost $2000, $5000, $10,000? Or can I just use the free trial versions of everything for the 16 to 18 weeks the class will run. We would be rebuilding all the machines every semester anyway. The students need to see how the lab is set up, and even assist in setting it up before we start the "official" vmware labs. I like to show the students the setup anyway, No telling what they will get out of it.

Thank you, Thank you, and Thank you forum members for ANY advice you may have to offer (Yes, even if it includes telling me to get more training, I asked my boss to make room for that in the budget as well).

Regards.

Has anyone solved this problem? I have run into the same thing while trying to start up 400 micro vm's.

I have a 12 core(24 cores with HT enabled) and I am trying to start up 400 micro vm's.   I have been stopped at 300 and my system is no where near overloaded.

Thanks for any help!

If I'm not mistaken unless you have some kind of affinty rules setup then DRS will not migrate machines unless the Cluster is believed to be inbalanced.

If you are planning  a standard virtual environment - you would want to get a license for vCenter which will allow you to centrally manage the environment and then you will need number of ESXi licenses - the number of licenses will depend on the number physical servers you will virtualize and their requirements for physical resources -

VMware has different license levels = Standard, Enterprise and Enterprise Plus - as well as bundled packages like Essentials and Essentials Plus - for more information check this out - http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/vsphere_pricing.pdf
