Did you rebooted the server and tried again ? If not, try disabling all non Microsoft and VMware services using msconfig, reboot the server and try again.

Three times Gretzky asked the same question (one that I would also like the answer to) and three times woody has come back with a totally confusing unrelated answer.

Woody, if you dont understand the subject, don't answer.

Re: Can't upgrade VMWare fusion 6 to 7 on Yosemite. Install application reports "File Not found"

OK, I had the same problem, I had VMware fusion 5. I updated my OS to Yosemite last night and this morning VMWare Fusion puked all over the place and couldn't open. So I went and downloaded Fusion 7 Pro thinking that I will just install that from scratch and everything would work! Wrong...

It kinda sucks but what finally worked for me tonight (in this order) is that I

1. formatted my hard drive and

2.restored a fresh copy of Mac OS (Mountain Lion)

3. I THEN downloaded and installed VMWare Fusion 7 pro.

4. After I installed VMWare 7 Pro THEN

5. I updated to Yosemite.  IT worked!

So basically you have to be running or have installed VMware Fusion 7 BEFORE you upgrade to Yosemite and the all the links will port over (or whatever caused it to break in the first place.)

We will be running version 7, and I will give this a try on Monday to see if I can get it to work in our environment.

Network Boot from AMD message when installing Guest OS

$

Hi,

I am trying to install a Guest Operating System in Vmware Workstation using an ISO of Windows XP SP3 which I obtained from MSDN subscriptions.

I setup the Virtual Machine using the New Virtual Machine Wizard of VMWare Workstation (I choose the option "Typical") and "Install the operating system later". After the initial setup, I point the CD/DVD device of Virtual machine to the ISO file of Windows XP SP3 on my hard disk.

My VMWare Workstation Version is: 7.1.0 build-261024

Host Operating System is: Windows 7 Ultimate

Regarding the CD/DVD device:

"Connect at power on" is already selected.

Device Type is: IDE 1:0 CD/DVD (IDE)

I checked the file type of the ISO file I obtained from MSDN and it is indeed an ISO as shown below:

en_windows_xp_service_pack_3_x86_cd_x14-60489.iso: # ISO 9660 CD-ROM filesystem data 'GRTMUPD_EN                      '

When I start the virtual machine, I press F2 and go into BIOS. Modify the boot order by moving the CD/DVD ROM option to the top of the list in Boot Order. Press F10 (to save the Boot configuration changes and exit). However, even after this the Virtual Machine attempts to boot from the Network Boot device. I have attached the screenshot of the message I receive corresponding to Network Boot.

Why does the Virtual machine not boot using the ISO file which I have pointed the CD/DVD device of Virtual Machine to?

Please note that I do not have any physical CD/DVD device in my computer. However, I do not think that should have any impact on it because VMWare Workstation will virtualize the CD/DVD ROM hardware for the Virtual Machine even if the physical machine (host computer) does not have a CD/DVD ROM.

I have used the procedure above to successfully install Windows XP SP3 Guest operating System in the past but now it does not seem to work. It appears that the booting from CD/DVD ROM does not work and it goes to the default option of Network Boot each time. Please help me fix this issue.

Thanks.

Support for kernel 3.17?

When WS 11 achieves GA (looks like December?) will it support kernel 3.17 as that would appear  to be the default in openSUSE  13.2 and in fact is now the stable version.  Or for testers here maybe, just maybe a third TP release??

Hi NeonFlash,

You probably have a disc which contains just Service Pack 3, intended for installing the Service Pack atop an existing Windows XP instance.

Check on MSDN for a separate download of Windows XP with Service Pack 3, and download that one.

Re: vShield Endpoint Licensing

Thanks for the reply.

I spotted this KB article yesterday:

VMware KB: Downloading and enabling VMware vShield Endpoint 5.x on supported VMware vSphere platforms

I'd come across the article before but had always jumped straight to the v5.5 section. Against v5.1 it says the following:

  • If you are exclusively using the vShield Endpoint feature of vCloud Networking and Security (vCNS) in vCenter 5.1, the vCNS asset may show up as unlicensed or with an evaluation license in the vCenter Server console. Even in evaluation or unlicensed mode, the vShield Endpoint feature will continue to be fully functional.

So, if I'm reading that correctly I can use vCNS for vShield Endpoint and even though it'll go unlicensed within vCenter after the initial evaluation period the vShield Endpoint features will remain fully functional.

Re: Fusion 5: Could not open /dev/vmmon:... after Yosemite installation

The merits or demerits of Yosemite are, to me, beside the point.  I looked through the VMWare site and product line closely for the first time.   I now have the impression that Fusion is the lone consumer product in a line geared for midsize to enterprise-level businesses.  The licensing and service models reflect that market where updates are charged either through service contracts, license packs, and related methods but charged all the same...

I'd be very carefull with deleting some files, if you do not want to loose VM. Instead of that, you can backup even VMs with snapshosts, but you have to allow it in ghettoVCB.conf:

ALLOW_VMS_WITH_SNAPSHOTS_TO_BE_BACKEDUP=1

Experiencing the same problem. Exchange 2013 on VMware and Outlook responses very slow. Setting the TcpAckFrequency did not solve the problems, but our clients are running on ESXi 5.1 U2 (VDI).

Did you open a VMware case and had any response?

I have a similar problem. I was using Microsoft Project 2013, and Microsoft outlook 2011. The screen flickers especially after I clicked on the '+' icon to expand the screen.

Interesting... I've never heard of sample failing to complete... That's a new one to me.

If you move the mouse inside the VM and interact with the guest OS as usual (albeit slowly), does the sample eventually complete?

Thanks,

no. the sample window is open, the bar is pulsing as if it is doing something, but, its not doing anything.

been in and out of the guest several times, and back to host, nothing has happened.

Window is open maybe 1/2 hour now.

Yosemite/VMFusion issue

My screen keeps on flickering very quickly and when I click on a drop down (for example when I'm trying to choose a printer on Microsoft word), the drop down flickers and then disappears.  It won't let me choose anything.  Anyone else having this issue?  I'm on fusion 7 and the new Yosemite.  This never happened when I was Maverick and Fusion 5.

Weird.  Can you collect a Spin Dump from the host while it's in this state?

I think the sample will terminate itself if you shut down the VM... but then the sample output will probably be of no use at all.

Thanks,
