Re: Downgrading hardware version from 10 to 8

As per me, may be there are other ways to do the same  &  if editing vmx goes wrong may affect entire VM. This may be the reason it is not recommended to edit VMX.

Mixing 5.1 and 5.5 is not recommended. It will have its own implications.

Issue during OVF template deployment (ESXI 5.5)

Hi,

     I created a VM with default settings and exported OVF template out of it and deployed new VM with this template. Every thing works fine.

     But if I change some of the CPU and other options in my VM and create OVF template.. creation works fine but this template refuses to deploy properly.

     These are the change I did in VM settings, not sure which change is causing the issue.

      cores per socket :4 ,

       cpu reservation : 2.4GHz*4,

       HT: None,

       CPU/MMU virtualization : Hardware CPU and MMU

        Low Latency: High,

        SMBIOS.reflectHost = TRUE

I found below lines in OVF file generated with above change , these could be causing the issue

<vmw:CpuCompatibilitySection>

      <Info>CPU compatibility constraints</Info>

      <vmw:Level vmw:level="-2147483647"/>

      <vmw:Level vmw:level="-2147483647" vmw:vendor="amd"/>

    </vmw:CpuCompatibilitySection>

.

.

.

<rasd:Reservation>9576</rasd:Reservation>

        <rasd:ResourceType>3</rasd:ResourceType>

        <rasd:VirtualQuantity>4</rasd:VirtualQuantity>

        <vmw:CoresPerSocket ovf:required="false">4</vmw:CoresPerSocket>

Please help me to understand what could have went wrong!!  (If I delete these lines in ovf file then deployment works fine)

vCAC Advanced Service Blueprint, VCO Linked Clone Workflow, setting timezone problem

So I'm having trouble when requesting a catalog item built from a VCO workflow in VCAC.  I'm using the VCO workflow "Linked Clone, Windows with Single NIC and Credential" located in VCO under vCenter >> Clone >> Linked Clone >> Windows Customization.  I can run through the workflow just fine in VCO, but I want to make it available via vCAC.  When I try to request a VM using the workflow, the request process fails during filling out the form in the TimeZone section of the form.  There appears to be a problem with vCAC querying vCO to do the search for the appropriate TimeZone setting.  The query works fine from within vCO, but not from within vCAC.  Thoughts?

Sounds like the best you can do with a single switch. I'd opt for LACP instead of a static LAG, though.

I would just define a higher max port value on the existing profile.

Syncan rocks and I am looking it over and another script made from hs work.

As far as the other reply - Yes it's easy to use and mess up and that seems to be what happend to a former employee if you get my meaning :-) I am trying to get it on even if in full manual mode.

Re: The same mac on vmk0 and vmnic2

You can change the MAC address on vmk0. If vmk0 is no longer using the burned-in address, it likely means someone deleted the original vmk0 and created a new one, which pulls in a VMware OUI.

The physical network adapter MACs are neither advertised nor learned by the upstream switch. This is because zero frames are being generated with a source address of your physical network adapter.

Other than the initial address used for the installation, the hypervisor uses it's own OUI for VMs and vmk ports.

Few home lab questions

Hello there,

I have successfully managed to build my homelab to get more used to ESXi and vCenter server. I am running single ESXi on Dell hardware. On this ESXi host I have vCenter server along with DC as VM. I am booting off ESXi using 2GB USB flash drive. However, I have stumbled upon this problem and have few other questions to get my head around.

So here I go..

1) Somehow I am getting "Lost connectivity to the device mpx.vmhba32.C0:T0:L0 backing the boot file system /vmfs/devices/disks/mpx.vmhba32.C0:T0:L0. As a result host configuration changes will not be saved to persistent storage". Now this message is fairly straightforward which indicates possible issue with my USB drive from where I have booted this ESXi host. However, when I run esxcfg-scsidevs -l command at SSH, it does show up this device there as below. Also performing rescan of storage devices and datastores hasn't fixed this issue either. So how can I get this resolved?

2) In regards to database, I had opted for SQL Express to be installed on same VM as vCenter server when installing vCenter server. I can see SQL Server service as running in services console. However, when I go to Start menu of this same server I don't see any SQL Management Studio. How would I go about and check DB instance and other stuff like rollup jobs ? All I see in there is SQL Server Configuration Manager and Import & Export data (64-bit). Do I need to install anything separately?

Any guidance would help...thanks..

Solve my problems please

I have few doubts on  virtualization

1. How does vmware vsphere vmkernel help in allowing os programs to run on hardware .

For example: If i have a 32 bit compiler and i am running on virtual hardware how does vmkernel manage to execute the program on the system i.e. virtual hardware

2. If hardware resources are being used by vm-kernel on which level does it act i.e. level 0 or level 1 . If each machine is allowed to run on level 0 how can it fully utilize the real hardware.

Re: Virtual Domain Controllers Locking Up

I'll add my 2 bobs worth.

It's very unlikely the issue is caused by the NIC driver particularly as the e1000 is natively supported by the OS.

All though VMware's best practice is to use the VMNET3 driver on OS's which are supported, it is not a requirement. The E1000 works fine and although it has a marginally higher resource over head in the VM World than the VMNET3 the E1000 is in some ways preferable..(this is a lengthy conversation not to be had now)

I have seen VM's lockup but have not attributed the issue to VMTools.. The issue as always been OS centric.

BUT

You have identified the issue is very likely related to VMTools..Your trial and error has proven this..

What do you see in your OS event logs at or near the time the OS hangs????

VM Support could be on the money.., The end point agent would not be installed if VMtools are not installed..(are the end point agents installed with a typical install of VMTools??)

Could anyone comment on are the end point agents installed with a typical install of VMtools??

Jess could you share your Event logs "System and Application" from the effected OS at or near the time of the hang.

Re: Workstation 11.0 Performance not as good as Workstation 9.0?

I share your pain, but as an FYI, there were/are substantial problems with vmtools from Workstation 9.x WRT file corruption on Shared Folders if they are being used with Linux guests. Just copying files or opening files things are seriously broken. These problems weren't fixed in VMTools until the ones included in the last release of Workstation 10 (10.0.4 IIRC). If you aren't using Linux guests or Shared Folders in general, you might okay with VMTools from the earlier Workstation versions. Just do a seach of this forum for details, if you're interested.

VMWare seems to have taken the "Add more features" product path and doesn't seem to be concerned with performance at all. I wouldn't complain as much if they had added, ohhhhh, something like DX10 or DX11 support (or the upcoming DX12 in Win 10), but they haven't, we're stuck on the now very, very old DX9 for graphics - soon to be 3 major generations old. - The Great GrandPa of DX versions.

Unfortunate for those of us that use Workstation on a daily basis that we have to suffer with slower USB, slower ethernet and lower WEI numbers with each new release of Workstation and even buying a faster host doesn't seem to help too much either. If it weren't for Windows 8.1/10, I would be on Workstation 9 as well, but even then as new host hardware drops USB2 sockets in favor of USB3, USB3 support will be needed which means a newer version of Workstation. But even Virtual Box doesn't have USB3 support yet..

Thanks for providing the reality of "hard" numbers. Perhaps if people stop buying/upgrading, maybe peformance will take a front seat for a release, but I am not holding my breath for that.

Re: Any idea how I can get tcpdump-uw to capture more than the last 60 seconds worth of data?

Hmm,

Let's try this. What if you SSH into your host using PuTTY and configure PuTTY to log its results -> Session -> Logging set a path. Then, we can try using the -C switch and set it for a large amount so that you are able to get more than 60 seconds. There is also a Seconds Switch but that wasnt really do much for me.. I set it to 5 and it clearly went past 5. That switch is -G 5 (replace 5 with any number..)

See if this gets your more than 60 seconds.

tcpdump-uw -c 100000000000000000000000000

A new ISO containing the toolchain packages for VMware vSphere ESXi 5.5.0 Update 2 is available for download.

This image includes the headers.tar.bz2 file. Thank you for alerting us to this problem.
