Re: User Interaction object in a workflow

Try using some basic html tags such as br, ul, b, ol, li, i - I don't recall whether or not they carry over to the Web client so let me know how that turns out.

Re: SSO not working when logging into Win7 VM - Second login required

Thank you for your suggestions folks. After some more troubleshooting, I started to remove components from the equation and found the problem to be Imprivata which we use for our SSO here. Apparently the version I was attempting to use had issues with Windows 7, because we installed a newer version (after updating our appliance) and voila! the sso worked perfectly. I don't know why I didn't think of that earlier, hopefully this thread will save someone else some time.

Nope.  I'm still back to re-sizing not working.  Intel Graphics family video.

Vmware 7.1, Windows 10, and 27" iMac Retina

I upgraded to Windows 10 and it runs and looks great.  The only problemm is the VM starts up 2560x1600 filling up about 1/3 of my screen.  I can stretch it out to cover about 80% of the screen.  It also doesn't make a difference whether I check or uncheck "Automatically adjust user interface size in the virtual machine" under Display settings.

How do I get Fusion to remember the size, each and every time it shrinks down to 1/3 of my screen size?  I then have to stretch the window.

Thanks!

Workstation 11 Internal Error

Hi,

I'm using Workstation 11 on Windows 10 TP 9926 with the latest updates as on 1/30/15. I have Win7 Pro guest and when I try to start up the guest OS I get a message box "VMware Workstation Internal Error".

There aren't any error codes or other information. Would appreciate some help to get this repaired. Thanks.

Re: Which "version" of Windows 7 Professional do I buy to be compatible with Fusion?

Thank you to both jmattson and dlhotka for your answers.  I have found that the information provided by many sellers to be confusing.  Sometimes the letters "OEM" are only in the fine print somewhere near the bottom of the page.  But often there is a Microsoft Product number listed such as: FQC-08289, or FQC-04649.  I was hoping someone could provide me with the correct Microsoft Product Numbers to be looking for.

               Are there any OEM versions that are OK to use?

I called Microsoft technical support and explained all this to them. The advisor was very nice. She put me on hold and talked to her Chief Technical Advisor, then to her Supervisor.  They said that as long as I used a new, authentic key, that it was fine if I used any version of Windows 7 in virtualization software on a Mac.

Re: PowerCLI script runs slow

Great tip. I rewrote the script and now it takes only a few seconds to run. My question now is how would I parse the LUNID from the the end of the RDM mapping file name? for example, how would I return just the number have the _ at the end of the file name: "[VMW-DATASTORE-54] SERVERNAME/SERVERNAME_2.vmdk"

$vms = get-view -viewtype virtualmachine

Foreach ($vm in $vms)

{

   $devices = ($vm).config.hardware.device

   Foreach ($device in $devices)

   {

      if (($device).backing.diskmode -eq "independent_persistent")

      {

         ($vm).name

         ($device).backing.filename

      }

   }

}

Thanks again for your help!

No probs, glad to help

I'm afraid I don't have my lab up and running to see the sample data being returned, but if I understand correctly, you're just after the number 2 from the string "[VMW-DATASTORE-54] SERVERNAME/SERVERNAME_2.vmdk"?

Something like this would strip out the number only ... using the "_" and the ".vmdk" as boundaries on either side;

$str="[VMW-DATASTORE-54] SERVERNAME/SERVERNAME_2.vmdk"

$str.Split("_")[1].TrimEnd(".vmdk")

Hope this helps?

Cheers,

Jon

The question came about from a lot of "what if" scenarios from some super paranoid PMs. I appreciate your answer! I honestly bought the answer that I had gotten earlier, I just wanted a bit of affirmation! Thanks again!

Recovering from network outage - any new features or robustness?

0
0

I recently had a network glitch that resulted in linked clones losing connectivity with the connection server. The clones and pool never fully recovered and I had to disable the pool, delete the VMs, and clean things up using ADSIedit and SQL. This has been a problem with View - it's unable to recover gracefully from outages / connectivity issues.

I'm on 5.3 - have there been any improvements in the latest 5.x or 6.x code that address connectivity issues, recovering gracefully from outages, etc.?

I am looking into enhancing my View architecture to mitigate this issue by adding another connection server, etc., but I fear this will only limit the damage rather than eliminate the problem completely.

Re: Who here has done the vSphere Design Workshop (VSD)?

Hey piedthepiper,

I haven't taken the Design Workshop for the 5.x series, however I did take it back in the 4.1 series and it was a great experience.  The networking of the people, working through the design problems they give you, it was all great.  However it gives you really good grounds on design choices, best practices, etc, it however is not the be all, end all to study for your DCD attempt.  There is much more to prep for prior to attempting your DCD.  I have heard many people take this course thinking it will line them up for a successful attempt at the DCD and if it doesn't they are upset.  I think if you haven't had a great deal of design work in the past it is a great course to take as a starting point.  Or if you have done design in the past but haven't done it in a while its a great refresher. However I would also suggest looking at some other study materials.

1.)  The DCD Blue print, it is very LONG and has a tremendous amount of information in it, some of the "study" materials linked in it are not so great but none the less it will give you an idea of what can be asked on the exam.

2.)  The community forums are another great place to look for study guides and other blogs where people have blogged about their experiences / study materials

3.)  There is an extreamly great Study Group on google+ called VCAP-DCD Study Group with a lot of people who are also currently attempting the DCD or have taken it recently.

4.)  Lastly I have created a DCD Simulator at www.virtualtiers.net which will give you an idea of what the exam is like.  Also at the end of the simulator I have created a study guide with the materials you should know prior to attempting the DCD.  The Study Guide I created is mostly the Blueprint with all the fluff stripped out of it.  Not all sections in the table of contents have been finished yet but there is a few that dive into each topic area very well.  The study pack is still a work in progress.

I hope this has helped, if you have any questions please let me know.

App Volumes Writable Volumes not working

0
0

I am doing a POC on  App Volumes.

I have the AV manager installed, the agent installed on the master with linked clones built and one app stack created. This all works OK, so I am confident that connectivity for AV is working OK.  Then I created a writable volume and assigned it to the group Domain Admins, which I am a member of.  This also seemed to go OK.  However, when I log in as me - a domain admin - and make any kind of change to the VM whether installing an app or writing and storing a document it never gets saved. I have looked in the AV manager and I can see where my user has a writeable volume and it's enabled, but the state stays detached.  Even if I log in, the state is detached.  What am I missing?

Thanx... Jon

Re: Help Create Some New DCD Study material / New Material

Sorry for the lack of updates, life has been keeping me busy, however stuff is in the works.

With the 5.1 being retired shortly I will be over-hauling the site a little bit.  I will be taking the current simulator and moving it into a 5.1 exam section (Retired) and reworking a new simulator for the 5.5 exam to better simulator the experience.  I will also be taking the extra questions I had in the works with MSCS, Autodeploy, and Dependencies into the new 5.5 simulator.

So hopefully in the next few weeks I can launch the new site / simulator.

Physical NIC Link Speed setting

I'm using 10Gb links but my physical NIC speeds are set at 20Gb in the "manage physical adapters", "actual speed, duplex" field (because that is how they get configured by default when I install ESXi on them).  However the links I am using are actually 10Gb links.

-Is this correct or incorrect given I have 2x10Gb links going to UCS Fabric Interconnects?

-Is there any possible impact to this?

-Is there a possible impact to changing this while Vms are running on the host?

Purple screen " Can't detect the last level cache " ESXi 5.5u2 install HP DL360p Gen8

Hi,

   I got in less than one hour 4 purple screens with "Can't detect the last level cache" while installing ESXi 5.5u2 on a HP Proliant DL360p gen8 , even with HP Custom ISO or the VMware ISO, it appears that I succeeded only one time to install, and just after reboot, I got the purple screen too with the same message.

     By looking in the communities and googling, I found an option to set "Max CPUID Value Limit" to disabled, but it seems that this option is not present on DL360p gen8, whereas matrix compatibility guide of VMware is showing this server as supported .

Any help is welcome...
