Re: VMWare Workstation 11 poor host performance

never mind.. See that there is a C:\..

mainMem.useNamedFile = "FALSE"

location at c:\ProgramData\vmware\workstation\config.ini

Editing for clarification: Add the line to the config.ini and then reboot host and start them back up. Look inside your VM folders and they will not show the vmem files except the lck file when running.

VMWare fusion stops working on Yosemite after force quit

$

Hello All,

For the second time in the last 2 months I have had VMWare fusion stop working after a force quit.    The first time it happened the only way was able to get Fusion working again was to erase my drive and resinstall my machine from a time machine backup with a date prior to the problem.  I am hoping that someone can help me with this recurring issue.

Here are the details for my latest.

1. I am running vmware fusion 7.1.0 on a mac book pro running Yosemite.

2. Fusion was running and has been for well over a month

3. At the time the problem occurred I was running an Ubuntu 14.02 desktop client doing android development. I had finished building an APK and used the devices menu to map my HTC Android phone (connected via USB) the the Guest.

4. Fusion froze when I tried to map the USB phone to the Guest

5. after a few minutes of beach ball I did a force quit.

6. I then relaunched Fusion and I could see the menu but no windows... After a while my stopped VMs showed up but when when I tried to start I could get a cannot connect to some vmware agent mesg (I can't remember the exact mesg).

7. I rebooted the machine.

every since then I run VMware from my account and I can see the menu. but any action that results in displaying a window (i.e. file ->open, Preferences, etc) hangs vmware and grays out the windows.  So... VMWare is running but there are no UI elements.

Here is what I have tried.

1. login to a different account and run fusion... fusion starts up with out issue.

2. Completely remove VMWare fusion from my mac using this manual procedure

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1017838

After removing /Application/VMWare Fusion.app and all the files in /Library and ~/Library with *VMware* and com.vmware*

i rebooted the machine.  I then did additional finds in ~/. and /Library for anything *vmware* and deleted all those files.

then rebooted again.

Then downloaded and opened the DMG.  When double clicking the DMG fusion installs but it never puts up any dialogs.  So... it remembered that it was broken and does not display info on my screen.

ps aux  | grep vmware

from a terminal shows that vmware is running

running vmware fusion results in the above.  No ui elements.

Switching to a new user and running vmware fusion brings up the initial wizard asking for a key.  Once the key is entered it proceeds as normal.

Working theory.

My guess is that although all the *vmware* an *VMWare* files have been removed from the system there are others files that have state info that in this case are corrupt and prevent vmware from running.

My question is... how do I completely restore my account so that vmware thinks that I am a new user.  What other files exist that don't have the word vmware or VMWare in their name.  A file for example that stores the license key?

3. Last time this happened I spent 2 days on the phone with vmware support and they were unable to help.  So... before I erase and restore from a time machine backup I would like to know what additional files need to be deleted to return my user account to a "virgin" state as far as fusion is concerned.

Any help in this matter is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

vROps does not track changes to individual VMDKs (e.x. change rate).

You'll find that there are already some preexisting symptoms for it.. see attached. You could also build a new symptom for the specific instance of c:\.. see embedded screenshot for example.

hello all,

here is the log file that is generated every time I run fusion...  found in ~/Library/Logs/VMWare Fusion/vmware-vmfusion.log

notice...

2015-02-28T15:41:57.966-05:00| VMware Fusion| W110: -[PLVMStartMenuManager runStartMenuAppWithArgument:], error: Error Domain=NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=256 "The application “VMware Fusion Start Menu” could not be launched because a miscellaneous error occurred (OSStatus -10810)." My guess is that this is what is causing issues with staring fusion.  What is interesting is that there are no google hits on this. Anyone have any ideas what this means?

vSphere 5.5 or 6.0 iSCSI setup with Openfiler or FreeNAS on Workstation 10

All

I'm trying to setup a simple system on VMware workstation and for some reason it's not playing ball

The setup: 2 x ESX 5.5 or 6.0 hosts each with 4 NICs and I want to setup Openfiler or FreeNAS to provide shared storage via iSCSI

I want to setup two NICs for Management and VMs and two NICs dedicated for iSCSI traffic

Most of the simple setups out there put iSCSI traffic on the Management network and one NIC for FreeNAS or Openfiler, which is hardly realistic or desirable

However when I setup on VMware workstation, despite setting up (I think) correctly with the iSCSI traffic to go through two different NICs from the rest, the ESXi hosts refuse to see the LUNs presented by either NAS software. If I put just 1 NIC for the NAS on the Management network, it presents the LUN for ESXi. If I setup to NICs which don't have the Management PG on it, I get nothing.

Has anyone managed to get ESXi 5.5 or 6.0 to connect to an iSCSI LUN on NICs which are on an isolated (Host-only) network on VMware workstation 10?

Re: Workstation 11- Vmware Workstation Server is not starting

$

HI, I have experienced a similar problem immediately after upgrading to 11. (11.1 didn't fix this either).  I have two (physical) machines with Windows 7/64 running Workstation. I have local and shared VMs on both. In version 10 I could connect from one to the other and and run its shared VMs. Once I upgraded both systems to 11 I couldn't connect to the other anymore. When I try to connect to the other server I get the following error (sharing is enabled in both):

---------------------------

VMware Workstation

---------------------------

Failed to connect to XL5640. XL5640 is an unknown server. VMware Workstation cannot connect to this server.

---------------------------

Once I downgraded one of the machines back to 10 I could connect it again one way. In summary:

WORKSTATION 10 - Connects to WORKSTATION 11 - YES

WORKSTATION 11 - Connects to WORKSTATION 10 - NO

WORKSTATION 11 - Connects to WORKSTATION 11 - NO

So, the server part is working, but version 11 does not recognize other Workstation xx as server.

WORKAROUND

I downloaded ESXi 5.5 (vSphere Hypervirsor 5.5) which is free, prepared a dedicated machine and am in the process of migrating all my VMs there. So far I have no issues.

Workstation 11 connects to the ESXi server in a snap. Despite the intimidating installation guide, a fresh installation on a CPU with a clean disk is straight forward. You can tweak things afterwards with VSphere Client (also free)  form another machine in the network. To install ESXi just burn the ISO and boot from it. I got it running in minutes. Hypervisor is the OS running this machine and all your VMs run there as well. This is a more robust solution down the road if you can dedicate a piece of hardware to it.

TIP

Create your VMs with Workstation. You can create them directly in ESXi from Workstation. In ESXi you can also create VMs but they are not the same kind of animal. I couldn't get those ESXi VMs to connect to a CD to install the OS, the BIOS is kind of bare bones.

Hope this helps, and I hope VMware fix the various flaws reported in 11.

I don't see anything wrong in the configuration file. Maybe the ESXi host's vmware.log contains some hints, as it shows the physical processor's capabilities!?

Just to be sure, the error pops up when you try click Finish in the create VM wizard? Did you configure anything special in the Windows VM, and/or do you try to set it up using the Easy Install feature, or do you select I will install the OS later?

I am also surprised that VMware writes the mem to disk by default.

Even after the fix from jhorsman I can see that only 3GB of my 16GB are in use, and I am running 3 VMs in parallel.

So it should be no problem to set these options.

I found this page:

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1008885

the last hint says:

for Windows hosts:

mainMem.useNamedFile = "FALSE"

for Linux hosts:

mainmem.backing = "swap"

exactly what jhorsman told us.

This will safe the life of my SSDs.

Have you looked at these two blogs ?

http://www.everything-virtual.com/installing-the-home-lab/installing-the-home-lab-creating-and-configuring-an-iscsi-distributed-switch-for-vmware-multipathing/

http://www.stephenwagner.com/?p=814

Here are two VMware docs that explain iSCSI in a little more detail.

http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/iSCSI_design_deploy.pdf

http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/techpaper/vmware-multipathing-configuration-software-iSCSI-port-binding.pdf

Also if your nested ESXi host are nested on an ESXi physical server remember to change your vSwitch so Promiscuous Mode is set to Accept.

I saw that with vrops it's possible to get some guests information like Disk spaces without having hyperic agent installed (I think vmware tools report some informations to vcenter).

Anyone know if there's also the possibility to get information related to Memory SWAP on linux/Paging file used on windows system in the same way without having to install an agent?

Thanks

VMWare Tools Installation problem - File Corruption

Hi,

I have  VMWare Player 7.1.0 running on a Win7-64 Pro host. Just installed Ubuntu 64 Desktop 14 LTS as a Guest. It has some version of VMWare Tools installed but it says I need an upgrade.

When I try to install VMWare Tools 9.9.2, I get the following error every time:

Corrupt file received from update server. Check your network connectivity and try again later. If problem persists, contact administrator.

I also tried File->Preferences->Download All Components Now. That worked for the other tools (Netware, Solaris, etc) but failed for Linux and Windows.

The primary things I want to get working are AutoResizing of Guest and copy/past between host and guest.

I tried those steps before and had no success. I tried them again exactly as you listed, in order, and had the same issue. Repaired the permissions and verified the disk while in OS X recovery system. Had even tried to run the VM on a different computer running latest Fusion and it gave same error.
