I have VMware 6.0.5 (32-bit) installed in Windows 7 Pro (32-bit), and I installed Windows XP Pro (32-bit) as my guest OS. Despite setting the USB controller compatibility to USB 3.0, and installing my printer software in my XP guest, neither my USB 3.0 external hard drives nor my printer are shown as present in my XP Explorer or anywhere within XP.
Is this because WinXP does not support USB 3.0? Should I plug my external hard drives and printer into USB 2.0 ports? Is there a procedure that I am missing.in order for my guest OS to access my USB devices, whether 2.0 or 3.0?
Update #1: I plugged my USB hard drive enclosure into a USB 2.0 port, and still nothing showed up in my WinXP Explorer. When I tried to disengage the enclosure, in order to return availability to my Win7 host, I got this error inside my XP guest:
"Unable to connect the USB device "(null)" to the virtual machine (error code 13). Contact VMware, Inc. technical support for assistance"
Why is this?
Update #2: When one procedure fails, i try another. You never know what you will discover...
...In this case, I have discovered that my external hard drive enclosure cannot be activated while my WinXP guest is running, because both my guest and my host will attempt to access it at the same time, and neither will succeed. nothing showed up in the Disk Explorers in both my Win7 host and WinXP guest. When I tried to disengage, that is when Error 13 popped up.
The rule here, at least in my case, is to activate my external drives or plug in my USB flash drives BEFORE activating my guest OS. Once my guest is up an running, I can go to my menu, find USB-SATA Bridge, and click on "Connect (Disconnect from host)", and my USB devices will be disengaged from my host and activated in my guest...
...But will this work in my USB 3.0 sockets? I will probably give it a test run.
