Automated VMWare tools deployment question...

$

Hello,

I am working on a deployment script and trying to cover as many "bases" as possible. So I am wondering, after spending quiet a long time googleing, Is it possible to push install VMware tools for the first time to a Windows virtual machine that is not reachable over the network (it does not have an IP)

I found that I can update tools if they are "pre-installed" on a machine and I can mount the tools. But can I actually install them directly with PowerCLI without logging into the GUI?

Thank you for your help!

- Russ

You're welcome. But that's without cache protection as far as I see?

And take care of cooling the RAID card. This is server-level hardware and if it runs for a while it will get hot. There should be a continous air-stream flowing around the RAID-CPU-cooler.

You have to install the CIM providers for LSI/MegaRAID controllers on the ESXi. But it looks like they are not yet available for VMWare 6.0, so you may try with the 5.5 ones.

Check 'Software Downloads' -> 'Management Software and Tools' section on above LSI page.

Afterwards you need a management workstation in the same subnet and you can install MegaRAID Storage Manager (MSM) there and connect to the CIM provider.

Here's a KB about the LSI tools for VMWare 5.0 as an example, but you may find further/more detailed descriptions by googling a little: VMware KB: ESXi 5.0 Server Management Tool Support for LSI

As said in your other thread: take care of cooling the controller's CPU, not waiting until the controller triggers an alarm. The latter could have various side-effects up to an unclean shutdown or even controller itself gets fried.

Okay, so i need more cooling inside my computer, what is a accepted temp for this controller?

From the specs page (see above):

Operating Temperature Maximum ambient: Controller Card: 60°C (55°C with optional LSIiBBU09)

but that's only the ambient temp which might be reached pretty fast if there's some I/O on the controller.

Servers mostly have some air shroud/tunnel installed to keep RAM/controller(s) etc. in a continous air-sream. That's why most of the controllers only have small heat sinks without a fan.

I have re-opened my service-request with AVAGO/LSI concerning this and I'm still waiting for reaction...

нулевая статистика использования диска при включении Virtual Flash Read Cache

vSphere Client version 5.5.0 build 1993072,  vCenter Server version 5.5.0 build 2001466

Что это может быть?

Vcenter 55 trial download question.

I want to setup a lab to prepare for my VCP55-DCV examination.  I have downloaded the ESXI55 and the Vsphere web client for V55, but I could not found the Vcenter 55 trail. Could anyone help me where I could download the vcenter 55 trial?  If you have any experience on how to setup the home lab for VCP55-DCV, please also share your valuable experience with me.

Thanks alot!

Philip

That's a bit of a chicken and the egg problem.

You could consider using the Copy-VMGuestFile and Invoke-VMScript cmdlets, but they require VMware Tools to be installed

There are a number of alternatives though:

  1. Make sure the Template you start from has VMware Tools installed. And then use the Update-Tools cmdlet to bring them to the right version after deployment
  2. Make sure your Template has the VMware Tools installation package in a folder somewhere. Then use the OSCustomizationSpec GuiRunOnce parameter to install during deployment of the VM.
    • If you don't want to have the VMware Tools installation file inside the template, use an ISO or VMDK to make it available during deployment

If you have the chance to take a backup of the VMs, do that first.

A downgrade will be a fresh install of 5.5 in your case, this usually leaves the (exiting) datatore untouched asking what to do with it during setup of 5.5.
