Re: How to convert a mathematical formula into vROPs super metric ?

I worked with VMware support to upgrade the vROPs nodes config from Medium to Large.

Also, the support person directed me to the same VMware KB article Removing a node from a VMware vRealize Operations Manager 6.x cluster (2107711) | VMware KB

He asked me to take snapshot of all vROPs nodes and said that there will be no data loss, as we also upgraded the disk size of vROPs nodes to accommodate for data .

But, eventually we dropped the plan to remove the vROPs nodes from cluster and kept it in view of future data growth.

Can we continue this in a remote session ?
Anydesk, Teamviewer 10 or skype ?
That will have a result much faster ...

I would say "yes" but the question is how/when? I have TeamViewer 11 on my host.

Do I understand you correctly that you think you can get a previous snapshot working even though I'm apparently missing ***000008.vmdk (my current state's vmx tries to reference that vmdk file)?

Thank you...

Re: Clone VM Script

Dear LucD,

I want to clone the VM through schedule tasks.

My requirement is

Automation through Schedule tasks :- The Script will run every day at schedule time and it will overwrite the old clone1 and create new clone2 in the data store. ( For only single vm Clone)

Please let me know how it will be done.

Thanks

Vmk

In the beta, documents are available in PDF format, I would assume they would be in the released exam too.

Re: Accessing a shared folder hard crashes VMWare Fusion (started happening recently)

Hi stembridgestembridge,

Really appreciated your work, we are trying to reproduce the issue.

1. Install the Fusion 8.1.1  with Guest OS is Windows 7 . Host is 10.11.5

2. Create network drive alias in the host desktop

3. Open sharing to share the folder "desktop"

4. Try to add the alias, change alias name or put it into subfolder, it still can work fine.

5. repeat the step 4 check mirrored folder->desktop, it still cannot hit the issue.

Is there any different between our steps?

Cheers

Re: Installation Problem Linux kernel 4.6: failed to build build vmnet and vmmon

The Kernel Branch 4.6.x is not supported by VMware yet.

There are a few patches online that promise to resolve the issue but I strongly recommend against applying any kinds of patches as tend to change values/paths that could cause problems on VMware updates/upgrades as the official scripts will then be looking for something that isn't there.

If you're using it for production, I'd recommend sticking with the older kernel on your distro until VMware supports the new branch.

How to stop vSphere from creating a second folder with FolderName_1 (when using a pre-existing VHD)?

Hi All,

I have VMware ESXi 6 installed on my Host. Using vSphere I am now trying to setup a VM from an existing VHD; however whenever I attempt to do so I invariably end up with two VM folders on my Host as shown below -

Capture.JPG

Here is the process that I am following -

1). Create a new folder on the Host with the name 'PA-OwnCloud'

2). Copy a pre-existing VHD to the above location

3). Create a new VM with the name 'PA-OwnCloud'

4). Configure the new VM with an 'Existing VHD'

Once the new VM is created configuration files inevitably end up being put into the folder 'PA-OwnCloud_1'.

My question is how can I configure the new VM so that all files occupy the 'PA-OwnCloud' folder?

Kind Regards,

Davo

VMUG EVALExperience and vCloud Suite?

Looking for anyone who got vCloud suite to work with the VMUG advantage?

I have a home lab running and have vSphere 6.2 running well. I went to go download the vCloud Suite to get some more in depth knowledge of vRA and vRO and it seems all i can download is what looks like another version of VCSA which i already have running as well as some other non-relevant iso's and I'm assuming i should be seeing ISO's or OVA's for vRO and vRA.

SS of the vcloud suite files:

Anyone ever get vCloud Suite to work using VMUG EVALExperience?

Signing a OVA with a CA-signed cert

Hi,

I'm having difficulty signing an OVA with a CA-signed cert:

* Does ovftool support CA 'code signing' certificates with the CA's provided intermediate?  After including both in the pem, openssl indicated it was valid but ovftool signing failed.

* The specs are a little unclear as to signing with SHA-256 certificate.  Is the --shaAlgorithm used for signing?

Thx.

You might have multiple connections open, have a look at the content of the $global:defaultviservers variable.

Hi Davo,

Its about order. If you create the VM first and then copy the virtual disks into the folder you will be okay.

By copying the virtual disk first and then creating a VM, vSphere is recognising an existing folder with the same name and therefore adding a suffix (_1).

Kind regards.

2. How we analyse the result.  ???

Re: Upgrade to ESXI 6.0 disappear after reboot

Hi Julien,

It sounds like a couple of things might be going on here. Like firestartah mentioned it might be due to an incompatible SD card however your previous version of ESXi is working.

For me another option is you might have a corrupted or failing SD card and after rebooting ESXi 6.0, the boot bank which contains 6.0 is not able to load, so reverts to the original  boot bank which contains ESXi 5.0.

As suggested either blank (format) the SD card or try another one - you could even try some Linux tools to check the SD card for errors but this is probably going too far

Kind regards.

Re: Convert VM disk larger than 2 TB to Thin

Hi Hafedh,

Sorry to be asking this but are you expecting that within Windows the disks will look different after being converted to Thin? If so then let me reassure you that you will not see any difference either from Explorer or Disk Management. Both will still display the Provisioned size of the virtual disk.

To confirm if the virtual disk has been converted from Thick to Thin then open the settings for the VM and look at the settings for a Hard Disk. It should state the Type as Thin Provision if the conversion was successful.

Does this make sense?

Kind regards.

VM poor local disk performance vs samba share

vmware workstation 12

Host: Windows Server 2012

I created a new VM from an existing physical machine. This went smoothly (except for fixing the mbr).

The disk I/O performance turned out to be very poor when the VM's disk was stored locally to the host.

I have a number of disk drives and I tried moving it to other drives to ensure it was not a problem with one drive.

The I/O performance was roughly 1.0 MBps.

I moved the VM disk into a network share (hosted on a NAS).

Still running the actual VM on the windows box, not the NAS, just the disk is now located on the NAS.

I mapped the share in windows.

Opened the VM in Workstation.

I/O performance improved to 30-40 MBps without any tweaking.

I am at a loss as to why this is.

I have VMware fusion on a MAC and it is blazing fast when using the VMs.

Something is weird about VMware and local disk access on this machine.

Any pointers I could try would be helpful.

Maybe VMware does not like the host os. Or the host OS is not providing vmware with sufficient priority or access to the disk in a certain way.

Re: MacOS Sierra Beta as Guest in VMware Fusion 8.1.1 fails

P.S. Remember to remove VMware Tools before you perform any App Store update that requires a reboot. I tried to update to the 2nd public beta today, but it got hung up during the reboot phase, because the shutdown kernel panic happens before the reboot-part of the update can occur.

Workaround: I removed VMware Tools and rebooted several times again. It kernel panic'd initially (automatically booting after that). The next time it hung during the boot, but responded to the VMware Restart from the Virtual Machine menu. Eventually I managed to get it back with the latest update installed. Better: Remove VMware Tools first, then reinstall it when the update is complete. Use Suspend, not Shutdown on that virtual machine until VMware releases an improved VMware Tools (beta, I hope!).

Re: Permissions on report templates & views

The answer from VMware support:

Hi Rob,

I have troubleshooted this extensively in my 6.2.1 lab environment and concluded that it is not possible to achieve this in vROps at this time and we are looking at a feature request.
I came to the same conclusion you mentioned in the case where as soon as the user got the delete or modify right he was also able to delete or modify the built-in views and report templates.
Even a View or Report created and owned by the local user admin can be deleted by a test user if they have the delete permission assigned to them under Views Management. If you dont give them the delete permission, even when they create a view or report which they own, they are not able to delete it.

Unlike the Dashboards, which can be shared by the local user admin and configured for a user in turn, Views and Reports are not the same.

In order to put this on record, we'd like to suggest to send a feature request. Would you mind logging your request using the link below:

http://www.vmware.com/company/contact/contactus.html?department=prod_request

This is the best way to receive traction on any feature requests or product enhancements you may have.
The link feeds into the various product managers and depending on the feedback they receive, they have the ability to submit feature requests/enhancements for future product versions.
