VMWare Horizon Client (64b) + Linux Mint (Cinnamon desktop)

Hello everyone!

I'm trying to use Horizon Client (tried with v3.2.x and 4.1.x) on a Linux Mint box (a Ubuntu/Debian based distro) with Cinnamon desktop.  Installation it's ok and although I get the "white buttons" known problem I can live with it. On installation I use the "scan" button to check and it looks ok.

I start the client from console running vmware-view , get my Horizon window where I put the host to connect to server, I can login (https) right and get the window with available desktop list (just one, it's a customer's infrastructure).  When I double click the window size changes (to adapt to windows size I've tried on settings: Large Screen, Small Screen, Full Screen -this monitor- ... etc) and I go back to the same list.

Looking at generated logs I see:

First, the usb error: I don't mind (right now), I write it just in case someone could think could be related with the problem.

Second, the "real" error.  If I manually run the xfreerdp '-sec-nla' '/parent-window-.....  command on console  I get the following error:

invalid option: -sec-nla

... and an exit code (reported by bash) of 128. That's looks consistent. Looking at man page for xfreerdp looks that, in fact, that parameter doesn't exists and sould be xfreerdp  --sec nla ... It's also weird to find parameters passed in windows style with slash ( /parameter ) instead dashed ( -parameter ). Also, parameter names doesn't look ok:  instead of -geometry 1440x810 Horizon calls /w:1440 /h:810.  Very strange, isn't it?.

Anyone knows what's really happening?. Any clue or idea?. Thank you in advanced!

This isn't working for me but let me post what I have done so far.

1. Installed the plugin on my orchestrator server and given it a reboot. (verified plugin installed correctly)

2. There is a new folder in my workflow library called vCO CLI which contains a workflow called Start Session.
1.jpg

3. I run this and create a session called test, I leave the IP address blank

2.jpg

4. Next I run the vcocli-gui.bat and enter the relevant details and click attach.

5. Then get the following error

What am I missing here?

Thanks

UMDS Infrastructure Best Practice

$

Hello everyone!

I am fairly new to VMWare and vSphere administration so I hope I didn't miss important things regarding my question. If so feel free to tell me.

So here is what I want to archive:

I want to setup the following enviroment (all hosts v6.x):

  • 1 Update Manager Download Services Server
  • 4 vCenter Servers with Update Manager
    • 1 vCenters will have more than 5 hosts and 50 VMs
    • 3 vCenters will have not more than 5 hosts and 50 VMs

The UMDS Server will have internet connection, the 4 vCenter servers won't. But they will be able to access a shared drive, where the UMDS Server should place the updates and patches.

The vCenter servers exist already and have Update Manager installed. I want to roll out the UMDS with a minimum of costs. The UMDS is not critical but would enhance our infrastructure.

To get me started I have some general questions:

  • Can I use one MSSQL Server 2012 with several instances for all the vCenters and UMDS?
  • Can I use MSSQL Express on the hosts, without using a dedicated MSSQL database, even on a vCenter with more than 5 hosts and 50 VMs?
  • Is there only a command line interface to work with UMDS?
  • Is there no built-in automation in UMDS? Like automatic patch download and export? Do I need to use Windows Scheduled Tasks or something similar?

My research so far:

UM & UMDS DBs on one host - possible? This question would help me move on but it has no answer yet.

Setting up UMDS for vSphere  This guide gives some details about  an offline setup but does not go into detail about the UMDS infrastructure.

Setting up Vmware Update Manager Download Service for Isolated Networks Pretty much the same scenario as the abouve post.

I will update this post as I aquire information to be always up to date and to have a How-To or something similar in the end.

Thanks for all your help and support!

vSphere Client doesn't load the storages via VCSA

Hello,

I have a very strange problems with Windows based vSphere Client. When I click on ESXi server the storage loading to the infinity.  You can see what I mean:

snapshot7130.png

The same happening and if I click on virtual machine no matter if the VM is up or down:

snapshot7132.png

If I'm lucky sometimes after very long period of loading the things look like in this way:

snapshot7135.png

Do you have ideas why this is happening?

For me is very strange, because the VMware Web Client works absolutely good and if I'm connecting with windows based client directly to the ESXi host everything is okay again.

Thank you in advance!

You can set Each VM to use 2 CPU and try and disable hyperthreading on the ESXi.

Re: ESXI 6 - Physical NIC vmnic linkstate is down/up - Every few seconds

It turns out the NIC needed to be reseated in the server chassis. The indicator light on the switch indicated a good connection (giving a false status). Once the cable was unplugged and reinserted the indicator light did not come back on. The path was followed back to the NIC and reseated. The indicator light on the switch then indicated a good connection.

Problem solved for now.

Thanks for your reply. Indeed for some VM I use thick provision and this explains the difference.

Thank you!

Choosing "VMware Workstation" in Mint 18 menu results in a busy cursor on the desktop for 2-3 seconds,

then... nothing.

Both Mint 18 and Workstation 10 are clean installs, specifically done to get Workstation to work.

Is there any history of problems with Linux Mint?

New SSD Not Showing in vCenter or ESXi

$

Hello All,

I'm fairly new to VMWare/ESXi.  I just added (1) SSD to each of my three hosts, but it is not showing anywhere in vCenter.  I rescanned all three hosts to discover new storage/vmfs volume and nothing.  I also ran various commands (esxcli storage core path list, esxcli storage core device list, esxcli storage vmfs extent list, esxcli storage filesystem list), and can only see the two HDDs that already existed.

The SSDs we installed are Seagate ST4000DX001 (hybrid SSD).  In addition, we are using ESXi 6.0U2.  I appreciate any help on resolving this so that we can enable VSAN.  Thanks!

Re: Moving from 1g switches to 10g

With vlan trunk i did not mean a lag

Just a simple link with all needed vlans.

Just connect your old switches with the new ones with one 1Gbit link so that each device connect to a switch can communicate with devices on the other switches.

One Layer 2 network over 4 switches.

Then you can migrate each link from 1Gbit to 10Gbit. Maybe you should disable drs in your cluster to avoid unnecessary vmotion traffic.

Platform Services Controller vs vIDM

Can someone help shed some light on the differences between the 2 items?

IF you use the external PSC in vsphere6, do you get the vIDM (Vmware Identity Manager) with that? I am looking at some vRA docs and it references the vIDM and being able to use that technology to extend federated services and SSO into things like o365, Azure, AWS, etc.

IS vIDM and the external PSC one in the same or is it a different product all together?

Re: Moving from 1g switches to 10g

Thanks, efanjo. I appreciate the response, but I don't think that gets me where I'm going. VLANs aren't the issue, link speed is. Earlier today, I read somewhere that connecting a 1g port on a switch to a 10g port on another switch is a no-no. There has to be a 10g uplink module on the 1g switch in order to connect the two different speed switches.

If you can point me to a link that states that it can be done without the module, please post.

Re: VRO workflow development - update vRO version

$

Hi,

This could be an issue with Control Center UI. Could you try to install the plug-in manually? Here are the steps:

  1. Produce a new plug-in build
  2. Copy the plug-in's DAR file to vRO appliance, into /usr/lib/vco/app-server/plug-ins/ folder
  3. Make sure to update file ownership/access rights to match the other DAR files in the same folder
  4. Open vRO Control Center, go to Home -> Startup Options page
  5. Click Restart button and wait a bit (usually, a couple of minutes should be enough)
  6. Go to Home -> Manage Plugins page and check the status/version of your plug-in

BTW, previous vRO releases (before vRO 7) didn't take into account plug-in build numbers (only version numbers) when comparing the newly installed plug-in with the existing plug-in. The newer releases, including vRO 7.0.1, should use build numbers also when comparing versions.

Also, there is a property controlling the installation mode of the plug-in (eg. compare versions or install always) - check the code in the auto-generated class <Pluginname>ModuleBuilder.java located in o11nplugin-<pluginname>-core project; there should be something referencing InstallationMode enum.

Re: Exam authorization

You could schedule the 621 exam, and even pass it, but unless you meet the other pre-requisites for VCP6-DCV (as found on this page: https://mylearn.vmware.com/mgrReg/plan.cfm?plan=64178&ui=www_cert) there's really no point - you won't actually be awarded the certification.

So, in your case, you should take the VCP550 exam, that will gain you VCP5-DCV. If you then passed 621 or 621D, you'd also gain VCP6-DCV.

OK, so I finally figured this out.

The shared virtual machines are located on a separate physical drive from the boot drive. I edited the mounting options for the partition to "/media/brian/VM" and both VMware Workstation and VMware Workstation Server are running the virtual machines. Note that "brian" is the user name for the account that I log into when I start the machine.

Is there a repository where I can get older EOL products such as Hypervisor 4.1 or earlier?  I am working with older hardware and would like to set this system up as a dev/sandbox server but I can't seem to get anything older than version 5 on the VMware website.
