Re: "Could not open /dev/vmmon" on macOS 10.12

Same boat here. Both VMware and VirtualBox installed. Both worked fine before macOS Sierra. After updated to Sierra, I get the same error message trying to open a VMware VM. Uninstalling VirtualBox and re-installing VMware fixed the issue but ultimately I need VirtualBox as well for various things.

Edit: tried to re-install VirtualBox after I got everything working again with VMware 7.1.3, and it seems VirtualBox will not install in macOS Sierra. So maybe this is more related to VirtualBox than VMware(?):

Sorry if this sound's obvious but have you tried via the vSphere client pointed directly at the ESXi host, i.e. not through vCenter. Do this if you haven't already tried and see if the VMFS volume shows and can be extended when directly connected to the host.

Kind regards.

Re: After delete snapshot most file in datastore missing

Hi there,

I would stop and pause here as you shouldn't be seeing the *-flat.vmdk when using the datastore browser. It appears that you are missing the vmdk metadata files and obviously the vmx config files. Like p_hall mentioned a directory listing of the VM working/home folder would be good to confirm this.

You mention that the VM is still running but that you cannot access the console for vSphere - can you confirm that is still the case, i.e. you are able to access data on the VM remotely? If so then first step for me would be to get a good backup of the OS before proceeding any further.

Once the data has been protected it is a relatively simple process to rebuild the vmx config and metadata files for the virtual disks but, again, I would ensure you have your data secured before proceeding.

Kind regards.

Re: Server CPU usage vs VM CPU usage

Hi amitlib and welcome to the community

I'll directly side step question 1 but try to answer question 2 which might indirectly answer question 1 - confused. Excellent!

Because of the way vNUMA works when you are selecting 1 socket and 20 cores this is effectively disabling it plus it may be reducing CPU scheduling opportunities. Unless restricted by OS licensing, I would always start building the VM as wide and flat, i.e. use sockets before cores. In the case you have mentioned try building the VMs with 20 sockets and then retest. If you have licensing implication that prevents this number of sockets then build the VMs with 2 sockets and 10 cores each which will still honor the underlying NUMA configuration of the server assuming that all other things are built correctly, i.e. identical memory configuration across the memory banks for the pSockets.

I know this probably just for testing but also consider right sizing your VM's, i.e. do they really need 20 vCores each? Probably a little brutal but I start at one and then scale up - obviously you can make some educated guesses on what the minimum number should be, i.e. huge SQL server probably 1 is not a good starting point

Check here for the performance implications of getting vNUMA wrong and bear in mind this is more from the guest than hypervisor but does illustrate a point: Does corespersocket Affect Performance? - VMware vSphere Blog

Hope this helps.

Greetings. Do you have Windows 10? I had this happen myself and for another coworker. we were able to fix it by disabling the DPI settings in the file properties.

To do this, right click on the shortcut and choose Properties (if you don't see this but instead see "open file location," click that and then right click -> "Properties" on the file from windows explorer)

From there, go to the Compatibility tab and check "Disable Display Scaling on high DPI settings"

Click OK and you should be good to go.

Cannot update from vRealize Operations Manager 6.2 to 6.3

I have deployed vRealize Operations Manager 6.2 using an OVF image as VM in my vsphere 6.0 web client. I am trying to upgrade to vRealize Operations Manager 6.3 using vRealize_Operations_Manager-VA-OS-6.3.0.4276417.pak file. I have successfully deployed the pak file by clicking Software Update under Administration Section in admin console section (https://IP_Address/admin). I agreed to the EULA and went through the install wizard. When I log back into vROPs admin interface in the Software Update tab after the update process has completed, I see "vRealize Operations Manager Enterprise OS Update" version "6.3.0.4276417" but when I go to the System Status tab in the admin console I still see Version "6.2.0.3528905". I have restarted the Virtual machine and restarted Master (take offline and bring it online) but I still see the old vrops version "6.2.0.3528905".

Hi there!

Is there a way to map a shared folder as a drive on MacOS Sierra guest?

The VMware Shared Folders are accessible through Finder but I need a special folder mapped as a drive.

Thanks in advance.

VM Crashing ESXi on Certain Files

$

Hello,

I have a very strange issue that I am looking for some guidance on.  I have an ESXi6 host with a 2TB local datastore that is a single Samsung 850 Pro SSD.  This datastore has 3 virtual machines on it.  A few weeks ago the ESXi box started physically locking up at night.  The error in vsphere shows lost access to datastore.

It took me a few days to realize that backups on one of the VMs were crashing it.  I disabled backups and it ran without issue for a few days.  I attempted to switch from the backup software installed on the OS to Veeam but running a Veeam backup causes it to crash with the same error.  I added a raid 10 array to this host and setup a vCenter server to attempt a storage vmotion, that failed as well.  I tried setting up a new Windows Server on the raid 10 array and copying files from the problematic server to the new one but after chugging along at a data copy it locks up the ESXi host with the same lost access to datastore error.  I have reinstalled ESXi and re-added the VM and everything comes out the same.

I checked the SSD and it shows as fine, the other VMs are it are fine.  I think there is some corruption with the VMDK file but I am at a loss as to where to go.  The biggest problem is that over the 3 weeks of troubleshooting the server has had many files modified and I can't run a backup or copy them off without the datastore crashing.  The server runs fine as long as I don't try to back it up or move the data.  I know I made some mistakes along the way (not restoring from backup right away, ever configuring it as a single drive to begin with) but any help would be greatly appreciated.

It seems that your NAT are not working yet.

Btw, have you added the translated IP address (10.50.1.199) as an secondary IP address of the ESG's Edge Uplink interface?

Connectivity problem between VM and kernel port.

There you can see 4 VMs: AD, ESXi1, ESXi2 and vCSA.

1.jpg

There are 5 networks.

2.jpg
VMnet0 is connected outside

The rest are internal networks.

3.jpg

4.jpg

5.jpg

6.jpg

Each ESXi server has 10 NICs. The rest of configuration is also visible on screenshot.

7.jpg
AD has 4 networks and 3 HDDs.

8.jpg
vCSA is vCentre Service Appliance downloaded from VMware.

9.jpg

Network card 3 on ESXi server and Network card 2 on AD are connected to the same switch without physical adapter.

AD IP-address is 10.1.1.111, VM kernel port has IP address 10.1.1.101. I can't ping each other. I created additional VM with Windows 2012 with IP address 10.1.1.11 connected to the same switch and AD and test VM can ping each other.

Why there is connectivity problem between kernel port and VM if there is no routing. All nics are in the same LAN.

Thanks

WHatever in understood is vr when doing replication keep all of new changes in memory of vr machine and after replication finished transfer all of them to delta disk is that correct?

If the host boots with both vmware NAT and DHCP disabled/manual, bridged networking is unavailable

if either NAT or DHCP is started, bridged networking (VMNet0) starts working

bridged networking should not need NAT or DHCP service
