Re: How to maximize performance by customizing virtual machine hardware

Workstation looks like an ideal tool for software development - doesn't it ?
Tuning your VM for best performance looks like obvious first step.
Unfortunately I have seen too many folks that ended in big frustration after they lost half year of work.
It is very easy to avvoid such bad experiences - you just need to decide wether you work like type A or B.
Type A can tune for performance - Type B should tune for survival and reliabilty.

type Atype B
stores the results of his work on the filesystem of the hoststores the results of his work inside  VMs
starts his work VM at 9 in the morning and powers it off a 5usually has the host always on and the VMs run all the time
regards his VMs as discardablestores important data inside his VMs
often rebuilds his environmentexpects that VMs will still be usable in 5 years
short-term orientedlong term oriented
needs to allow automatic Windows-updatesdoes never risk automatic Windows-updates
loss of a VM is no real issue

loss of a VM would be a real problem

If you think you are type B you MUST tune for survival - which requires completely different steps. So please tell us - which way suits you better.
Both types can be happy users ....

E01 images are used a lot by folks from the forensics scene.
I assume that you should have a tool that can strip the special headers of the format you use so that the result is a straight full disk-image like you would get it with a dd-command.
Is this possible ? - if not please explain how you proceed now.

Re: power management

Hi,

This should explain all: http://www.vmware.com/content/dam/digitalmarketing/vmware/en/pdf/techpaper/hpm-performance-vsphere55-white-paper.pdf

Brief summary is that with an HPE server if you set the HP Power Profile to Custom and the HP Power Regulator to OS Control Mode then you can control the servers Power Management settings from within vCenter - most recommendations tend to have you just set the power settings to Maximum Performance and then use Distributed Power Management to shut down idle hosts to "save" power :

Kind regards.

Hi,

I'll give you my "iron-clad 99% you do have backups don't ring me or blame me" guarantee that you should be right

Looks like others are doing it but just don't expect to get support from VMware or HPE if something funky does happens - it shouldn't be just so you are warn. As a level of comfort we are able to run an EVA P6550 against ESXi 6.0 hosts as an interim while we commission a 3PAR as the replacement - we acknowledge there is no support but ESXi 6 hasn't as far as I'm aware changed the way the FC protocol works or is implemented.

Kind regards.

ok sorry... I had to redo esxi3 and now it looks ok (used E1000E) nics.   I have 1 error  stating Virtual SAN cluster has one or more hosts that need disk format upgrade:  esxi2, esxi3

I dont see how to do that..

This is not working.  I tried to move a VM to this and get an error.

Trying to add a folder via web client I get:

Sorry, there's no way of increasing the time out setting.  Is this something you are asking for?

Re: sdd folder?

_2.vmdk is a name for the third SCSI-disk of a VM created via t he wizard.
Such a file should not be inside a .sdd directory.
Check if the file is open with lsof or tools like that.
And do not delete files directly - first rename it to "delete-me-later-original-name.vmdk"
If thats possible create a "delete-me-monday" directory and move the renamed file outside the sdd-dir to the new one.
If that works - and nobody complains until monday - start considering deleting it.

Just updating this issue. Finally all is working.

All my config was OK. After update V7000 to 7.2.0.11 version, firmware update to emulex components to version 10.3.144. VMWare Esxi 6.0 and drivers be2iscsi to version 10.4.255, the performance is normal.

By the way, after update V7000 software the iSCSI port go back MTU to 1500...so again must be changed to 9

Apple enabled Tab support for windows in macOS 10.12.

The default settings is "In Full Screen Only", it will collect the two full screen spaces onto one display as tabs.

You could change the tab settings like this:

Open System Preferences -> Dock, there is a dropdown list named "Prefer tabs when opening documents".

Select "Manually" in it.

Re: VMWare Fusion - Windows 10 - Network Adapter duplicating IP Address

Hi jdpjamesp,

For now I've set my Mac to a fixed IP, and it seems to have solved the problem. I'll monitor.

Could you try to generate a new MAC address of your windows 10 VM? First, you should power off your VM.Then you can generate a new MAC  by : VM settings -> Network Adapter -> Advanced Options -> Generate . Then power on your VM and see if your VM could get a different IP from your Mac machine.

Unable to use PCoIP with GPU Passthrough

I have a whitebox ESXi 5.5u2 host that runs great.  PCoIP works great for a couple of VMs, and GPU passthrough works great as well, but if I want to do both for a particular VM, it won't work simultaneously.  Of the several VMs I run, here are what's worth noting:

  1. I have a Win10 VM that successfully passes through an AMD HD6450. I then hook this up via cat6 ethernet passthrough from my basement (ESXi whitebox host) to our master bedroom and I watch TV on Windows Media Center and 1080p movies via Kodi. It works great!!
  2. I also have a couple of VMs I use PCoIP and the Horizon client with (windows 7 and windows 10) -- works great!
  3. The Issue: I have another Win10 VM that successfully passes through an AMD HD5450 to a monitor. What I'd like to do is use the Horizon client to connect via PCoIP to watch movies/TV.  PCoIP only works if I disable the GPU passthrough.  When the GPU passthrough is set up, I get the notorious black-screen during a PCoIP session and shortly after it times out.  The reason I want to use the GPU passthrough is for hardware acceleration.  If I remove the GPU passthrough, the CPU gets slammed to do the video processing and that's inefficient for my setup... not only that, but the HD videos are a bit choppy (definitely not acceptable).

I've looked at the logs in \ProgramData\VDM\Logs, but not sure which specific one is best to look at.  Since I didn't know which to check, I looked at debug_date_time.txt, the log_date.txt, the pcoip_agent log, and the pcoip_server log.  I don't know the major diff between the logs files, but if someone could explain which to look at, I will even submit them here (if that helps).

Or... Does anyone have advice on how to get this to work with a whitebox ESXi host and a desktop GPU?  I believe it's been done before.  I also have more GPUs to use if need be:

-ATI/AMD Radeon HD6970

-nVidia 200-series GPU somewhere

-GeForce 8400GS I may be able to dig up

-ATI/AMD Radeon HD6450 (currently used on another VM that I don't need pcoip for)

-ATI/AMD Radeon HD5450 (currently trying in the example above with pcoip)

Thanks in advance.

Can vRO register to multiple vCenters as extension?

0

Dears,

Not sure if my requirement is supported. My environment has 2 separated VCSA 6 (vcsa-01 and vcsa-02, no enhanced link mode).

Now I deployed vRO 7.0:

* use vcsa-01 as authentication provider

* add vcsa-01 instance to vRO

* register vRO to vcsa-01 as extension

Everything works OK. And then I want the vRO can also orchestrate vcsa-02, so I added vcsa-02 instance to the vRO. It also works without issue. And then I want vRO workflow can also be launched from vcsa-02's web client. So I tried to register the vRO to vcsa-02 as extension.

The register workflow finished without error, and I can also see the vRO UI (vRO Servers, Workflows, Scheduled workflows, Wait for interaction, etc) from vcsa-02 web client. But there is 0 entry under "Orchestrator servers". From vcsa-02's log file (/var/log/vmware/vsphere-client/logs/vsphere_client_virgo.log), I can see there are some 500 internal server errors:

Re: Multiple Solaris 10 Networking Issues

Hi nathanialc,

Which version of Fusion are you on?

However, the only network options that I'm given in the VM are e1000g0 and lo0, neither of which work.

Which network are you using? NAT or bridged? Could the network adapter get IP address inside your VM?

The default ethernet adapter is e1000 for Solaris 10.

Whenever I try to edit the ethernet settings in the .VMX file

How did you edit your VMX file, use 'Textedit' or vim on host? If you're using Textedit, please uncheck 'Smart copy/paste, Smart quotes, Smart * ' via TextEdit Preferences...

Which items did you want to change in your VMX file?

I'm unable to set the ethernet to VMXNET3 or any form of e1000 because of this.

You want to set your network adapter to VMXNET3?  If so, please edit item:ethernet0.virtualDev = "e1000", and change it to ethernet0.virtualDev = "vmxnet3".

Please use the following instructions to setup your VMXNET3 card in your solaris:

Activating a VMXNET3 nic in Oracle Solaris 10 (2009199) | VMware KB

Hope that would help

Re: How to maximize performance by customizing virtual machine hardware

I have a mix of A & B.

I start my VM at 8 and power it off at 5.

I don't often rebuild my environment .

my development is long term oriented.

I need to allow automatic windows updates.

I store results of work inside vm.

Loss of vm would be problematic.

Backup vm's to external drives regularly.

Re: Using an array for server list

Gotcha, when you export your list after running this command:

$esxiServers=get-vmhost| select-object Name

How are you saving that text file?

The reason I ask is that when you run that command you get an object back, not just a name.

How are you importing the .txt file after that?

In other words can I see more of your script?

I see you posting a few questions regarding Appvolumes 3.0.

I would suggest NOT using it and go for version 2.11. The 3.0 version is a technical review that I would not suggest using.

Has anyone found an resolution to this issue? We are having the same exact problem with our developers having their VS 2015 cash in their Win10 VDI.
