What is initiating the power on in both vCenters? Is it exactly the same tool/script/process?

I am directly initiating the poweroff and poweron through the vcenter for testing purpose

No matter where I initiate it from its the same

Task Name is different on both the vcenters

Re: Trying to understand DLR vs. ESG vs. everything else

Hi Jon, to give you some idea below is the typical NSX logical topology with Active/Standby Edge.

Edge can be deployed in ECMP or in HA (Active/Standby) in this example I use the HA mode.

If you would like to know more from design perspective, you can refer to this doc: VMware® NSX for vSphere Network Virtualization Design Guide ver 3.0

In above example, I have three logical switches orange, green and blue connected to DLR and DLR connected to Edge and Edge connected to uplink physical router/core switch.

Now for your case, you can choose whether you want to use Edge as the North-South Perimeter VM firewall or your pfSense.

Below are my comments to your question

What I am trying to understand is this:

  • In this lab how would I get "internet" down into a logical switch?

The above diagram should give you some idea how to get the internet down to logical switch, the perimeter VM firewall or outside physical firewall would need to do the NAT

  • I like that DLR are distributed and there's no instance like ESG, so no hair-pinning, etc.  However, DLR is just routing - do you use DLR + dFW to get segmentation?

Yes, you would use DFW for micro-segmentation. You can even deploy DFW without VXLAN (DLR, Logical Switch, NSX Controllers, etc). So introduce DFW into the environment without making any changes to the network, VLAN, etc and do VXLAN later once you get more familiar with NSX

  • I also like what ESG has to offer for SSL VPN, etc. but then how do I truly segment say Web Tier and DB tier?  Multiple interfaces on ESG?  Multiple ESGs?

2 options for the tier, you can connect each tiers to DLR then DLR to ESG as above picture or the tiers are connected directly to ESG if you don't want DLR.

  • Would a situation like the diagram above just NAT everything down into an ESG?

Probably down into logical switch, if the NAT is to ESG you probably need another NAT on ESG/double NAT

  • If I keep my pfSense in the mix as above, would I need to use OSPF/etc. to advertise the routes and logical switches and such so that I can automate deploying networks/environments within vRA?  Otherwise I guess I'd need static routes and that breaks the whole concept of ease/automation.

Yes dynamic routes will help to advertise the routes as DLR would redistribute connected logical switches to ESG and the routes learned by ESG would be advertised to the uplink router/switch.

If you have pre-defined networks e.g. all networks behind DLR would be 172.16.0.0/24 - 172.16.254.0/24, then you can also use static routes and configure summary routes 172.16.0.0/16 so you don't need to update routes when deploying new networks/environments.

  • Then applying the concepts to production, if I have 3 tenants, how would you get connectivity down into the tenant environment?  For instance, I have some ASAv implemented in production where I've carried my edge VLANs down into infrastructure that hold ASAv.  The ASAv then has interfaces into the necessary client subnets/VLANs/segments, and firewalling is done via those VLANs within the tenant.  Obviously no east-west control.  This is what I am trying to implement.

I'm sorry I don't quite get it, when you say edge under 'edge VLAN' are you referring to ESG or your edge network? If you want to extend VLAN outside of VXLAN networks, the option would be L2 bridging or L2VPN

That's a good diagram and icons by the way

Is it possible you have had a solution, past or present, that added new or changed existing tasks in vCenter? Some solutions or plug-ins, when installed, will add their own alarms and task definitions, for example. I wonder if something similar happened in the case of one of your vCenters.

Re: Different Task Name for PowerOn Task

No plugins have been installed other than patches which are all the same on all the vcenters

I even tested it on some of my test vcenters and they are also doing the same thing

Some vcenters have different task messages to the similar that I posted earlier

So just dont know why these event messages are different on all vcenters

Sending the Lease about to Expire emails to more people

In our environment, when someone requests a machine, it belongs to the business group, not just that particular user.  So when a lease is about to expire on that machine, how do you send that automatic notification email to more than just the original requestor?  I know that it will also send it to everyone in the Group Manager role, but we do not really want to add everyone in the business group in there in case someone snoops and figures out they can edit their own entitlements.

Are we the only company that operates this way?  Does everyone else just send it to the requestor only?

I'm running High Sierra 10.13.1 10.13.1 Beta (17B35a) and Fusion refuses to create the installation medium for High Sierra 10.13. Sierra and other versions of OSX install fine.

any thoughts?

Thanks.

How do you install UEM in NoAD mode?

Upgraded host macOS Sierra to High Sierra and Fusion 8.5.8 is no longer able to see guest BootCamp partition Win10

As I was writing this question, I kept on troubleshooting and found the solution.

Short Answer:

VMware Fusion Version 8.5.8 (5824040) does NOT support BootCamp in macOS High Sierra.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Host:      macOS High Sierra (10.13)

Guest:    Windows 10 Home

Fusion:   Version 8.5.8 (5824040)

About a year ago, I purchased and installed Win10 using BootCamp. I then purchased and installed VMware Fusion to access said BootCamp. I did this to have the flexibility to quickly access my BootCamp for quick and easy things, but also to be able to boot into Win10 when I need all of my hardware power. This worked in macOS Sierra (version 10.12). However, as soon as I upgraded macOS to High Sierra (10.13), Fusion cannot see my BootCamp Partition. I have been unsuccessfully troubleshooting this for a few days now as I use the Win10 in BootCamp for my professional work.

I guess the simple question that I have not been able to find an answer to is:

Does Fusion Version 8.5.8 (5824040) support BootCamp in macOS High Sierra (10.13) or do I need to purchase an upgrade to Fusion 10?

I have been trying to google this for days now and can't find an answer.

If Fusion 8 will not support macOS High Sierra, then my troubleshooting is a waste of time.

I do understand that I should have been paying attention to what upgrading my host macOS to High Sierra would entail, but I am just a simple consumer.

However, it would have been nice if my Fusion 8 would have had a popup to warn me that it would not be compatible with macOS High Sierra, if this is indeed the case.

Either way, if I need to pay VMware $50 for an upgrade or Parallels13 $80, I will have to re-evaluate what that $30 difference is worth to me and which of the two is the best bang for the buck.

Also, it appears that Parallels now offers a $6.66 per month for a yearly membership with:

- Free upgrades to newer versions

- Remote access to your Mac from any iOS/Android device or browser

- Cancel any time

Troubleshooting steps which eventually led me to the answer as I was writing this post:

- I am able to boot up into BootCamp and login into Win10. It is working fine.

- I deleted the previously working BootCamp from the Virtual Machine Library in Fusion 8.5.8 and tried to re-add it, just to get the error attached below. It does not see my BootCamp.

- Just for fun, I installed a free trial of Parallels Desktop 13 and it was able immediately see and run my Win10 in BootCamp almost instantaneously.

- Uninstalled Fusion Version 8.5.8 (5824040) and installed the trial version of Fusion Version 10. Fusion 10 was able to see the BootCamp and I was able to turn it on and login into it.

- Uninstalled Fusion v10 and downloaded a new installer for Fusion v8.5.8. Again, it cannot detect the BootCamp partition.

Error that I get when I try to add my BootCamp Partition to Fusion Version 8.5.8 (5824040) in macOS High Sierra (10.13).

Thank you for the suggestion.

I have now tried both Starup and Logon triggers. I have verified that the bat file is run and that vnetlib64.exe is executing (by putting a pause at the end of the bat file so I can see the results).

But unfortunately that backup file is not being created by the export. And yes, I have ticked "Run with highest privileges" in Task Scheduler

So I guess, will physical trunked need VLAN type as "VALN" with ID

But physical not trunked have to set to "None"

T

Thus Cat6 cable (physically not tunked) can't access to "Trunk_active" ?

Screensaver has been disabled through the Win7 optimization guide/tools provided by VMware. Unfortunately, I do not control which software applications are installed into the guest. I would like to figure out which processes are consuming CPU while the desktops are sitting at the ctrl-alt-del screen.

Hi

I see these folders on all my installations since AppVol 2.12.1. I found no solution to get rid of the Snapvolumestemp.old.

You should life with that one. The folder is always hidden and empty.

Let's cross your fingers that vmware will solve that in one of the next releases

Just for comparsion. I checked the idle cpu load on my vdi desktops --> win7 x64, 6GB memory and 2vcpus.

We use Sophos for virtualization (offload scanning), vmware appvolumes and vmware user environment manager.

All instant clones are very optimzid for performance. I can see in the vcenter view 165Mhz load on each vm.

I don't know if it's possible to lower the idle cpu load. I will check it.

Sorry my fault.

I checked again. For my idle horizon view vms I can see 165mb memory and 30Mhz cpu load.

I think thats a good value. Try to use windows "perfmon" tool. You can connect remotely to the idle vdi and check whats going on there.

Re: ESXi 6.5 - How to make second Port Group available to add to Virtual Machine Network Adapter?

$

This is still definitely an issue in the ESXi HTML5 client on 6.5U1 release 5973321 which is latest to date. The additional port groups do not immediately show up as available networks. After some time it seems it just appears in the list.

This is not the same case when you're running from within the vCenter Flash or HTML5 client.

The rub is that there is no locally installed client available for ESXi 6.5 any longer, so if you're managing a host without vCenter (say installing vCenter like I was today?), you may be stuck for a bit.

I was installing vCenter and it mistakenly got put on the default VM Network, whereas I had built the networking for a management VLAN. The VM port group existed, but the appliance couldn't be moved to the proper vm port group because of this bug.

Can anyone share the cli commands to change a vm port group on a running VM?

Hello hostasaurus,

If they are thin-provisioned LUNs you should be able to achieve this using vmkfstools -y (ESXi 5.0-5.1):

kb.vmware.com/kb/2014849

or

esxcli storage vmfs unmap (ESXi 5.5-6.5):

kb.vmware.com/kb/2057513

Re: Does the Provisioning Machine have to be domain joined for App Volumes?

Hi,

I think vmware changed these setting in one of the latest appvol releases.

All my provisioned vms are normaly domain joined. To be sure, I have no dedicated provisioning vms for appvol. I do this directly on one of my linked clone/instant clone test-pool.

You can try to enable the option "allow non-domain entities". This options is in the appvol manager --> configuration --> ad domains.
