Error 1316: cannot install, update or uninstall VMware tools

Hello. I cannot do a complete installation of VMware tools; I can't update tools or uninstall them, either. When I go to Add & Remove Programs and try to remove VMware tools, what seems to be the uninstallation process begins, but before it finishes, I get the error message: "Error 1316. A network error occurred while attempting to real from the file C:\Installer\VMware tools.msi". When I press OK, the uninstallation rolls back and I get a final message: "Fatal error during installation." I've tried this operation many times and have always got the same result.

In the Knowledge Base, when I searched for Error 1316, I got five entries. Some were not relevant to my issues or my operating system, and one dealt with registries and images and commands and looked a little too advanced for me. I recently upgraded from Fusion 3 to 4, and I also moved from an older Macbook to a newer model Macbook Pro, but the problem predates the change in Macs. Can this issue perhaps be solved just by uninstalling Fusion and reinstalling? Can I reinstall Fusion without having to set up my Windows files again? I'm wondering if there's some problem between old VM files and newer ones, and some cleaning up may be in order. I'd just like to find a simple fix to this problem, if there is one: I'd prefer starting over, rather than trying to follow some technical instructions that might be too complex for my level of understanding.

The host machine is a Macbook Pro, buiild 11C74, running OS X 10.7.2. The guest is Windows XP Home Edition, created originally in Fusion 3. The present version is 4.1.1. Thanks for your help.
