Re: The host can ping guest, but guest cannot ping host

I started the topic, and while I was testing, I must have somehow posted it.  I still have a problem, but not as described.

VMWare Environment:
Host: Windows 7 64 w/16GB of RAM, Intel Gigabit, and Intel 6300 Wireless
Guest: P2V XP machine

NICs:  Latest drivers, bridged mode.

Firewalls are turned off for troubleshooting, but it has made no difference.

I have two other computers with VMware Workstation on it, and neither have these problems.  They all three are running different versions, and two of them are running XP Pro 32.  One of them has a wireless card like this one.  The VMs are all P2V VMs also, and I've never had problems in the past on either machine.

Results so far:

- Since it was a P2V, I decided to remove the NICs in the VM properties, and remove all of the NICs from the VM.  Then I rebooted.  I could now ping the host, the host showed up in the arp cache, but I could not map a network drive.

- I plugged into copper and turned off the wireless.  I immediately could remap the network drive.  Everything was perfect.
- I turned on wireless, disconnected copper, and unmapped and remapped the network drive.
- I shutdown the guest, rebooted the host, and restarted the guest.  I could not map a network drive by name.  Since I could ping now, I was also able to map a network drive using the the IP address of the host.  Then I disconnected the network drive, and attempted to map the network using the host name, and it now worked.

- I checked the properties of both NICs in the host control panel, and they are set the same.  There is only one NIC in the VM settings, and the normal VMNet1, VMNet8, plus the NIC show in the guest's device manager.

It appears to be a name resolution problem that only affects the wireless interface.  This is also what I found when I Googled for the problem.  It may be Windows 7 or 64 bit related as that where I find others having problems, or it might just be that's because that's what is selling now, and people are putting the new 8 on new computers.  What I would like to find is a solution.

Thanks!
