ESXi 4 + DX80 iSCSI - Poor Performance

Hi!

I'm putting up a small site and I'm having some performance issues that I hope someone can help me with.

This is a completely new setup. When creating the first VM on one of the two hosts, I didn't think it was very responsive and I started digging.

Installed a simple Ubuntu server VM. This is the only VM running on the host and the LUN I'm testing.

I'm currently using 2 vmkernel ports on a single vSwitch with 2 NICs for storage.

The disk configuration on the DX80 is:

- 6 disks in Raid-10 - Single LUN, owned by controller A

- 8 disks in Raid-10 - Single LUN, owned by controller B

I know dd is not a very good benchmarking tool, but it certainly generate IO. I get the same result on both LUNs; between 30-60MBps and high latency.

The write latency reported by vCenter is about  100ms. Esxtop reports GAVG/cmd between 70-90. Kernel Average is 0, so the host appears to be ok.

The network appears to be fine. The switches (2 x Cisco 3750G stacked) does not have any CRC or other errors. I'm not using jumbo frames at the moment. I disabled it to verify the configuration first.

Any suggestions?

Hardware:
