Re: Vlan configured, but packets not tagged

Which pnic are you taling about ? the pnic of the blade ? the pnic of the switch ?

C3000 is an enclosure containing 8 blades and a switch.

I mirrored and wiresharked the port coming from a blade to the 6120.

Packet are not tagged so I think it is the pnic of the blade.

Am I right ?

I already activated the vlan on the port of the 6120.

Btw, as I have do I have to activated trunking ? (I have 2 vlan tagged and 1 non tagged ports in the dvswitch)

Did you open the console during the win 7 installation?

I have the same issue with Win-XP only after I restart the workpool and not opening the console the workpool finish installing the OS.

I know it sound like voodoo but you can try it, maybe this will help for me it's worked.

I figured out how to attach the ISO file to the VM's cd drive.  But when I go to start the VM I get a message stating that the OS was not found

That will probably never happen for any certification exam because people will just post those questions and answers online and/or sell them (that happens anyway, but they're not always correct whereas your way would be guaranteed to be accurate).

You will be given a piece of paper after the exam telling you which sections you got wrong answers on.  Not very useful, but perhaps a start for what you're looking for.

So with pfSense I can create a vm from my ESX server and use it as a router? Then how would I connect that vm with the internet of my ESX server?

You can turn on key mappings under Preferences.  Then map the 'Windows' key or the command key to 'shift'  Now, when you do a command-tab, the start window does not pop up.  I never use the start buttom or windows button, so not having it anymore is not a problem for me.

I seem to remember solving this problem before but when I recently reinstalled my system (OS X 10.6.8) and Fusion 4.1.3 running XP Pro, it came back.

Sorry to ask such a basic question, but do the Preferences mentioned above refer to VMware Fusion > Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse? If so, could someone be kind enough to guide me a little more?

By the way, the behavior I notice is not when I use Command-Tab but Command-Shift-4 to take a screen shot. The Start menu doesn't pop up immediately but sometime during the procedure. (It also pops up if I just press Command.)

Thank you,

David

As I mentioned before, this won't work with only a single IP address (which is in use for the Management Network). In order to setup another VM - e.g. pfSense - which needs access to the Internet, you need at least a second IP address.

Building multi-vm vApp w/ 2.6 fails due to profile not found

$

It seems there is a race condition when the processes fork off to build each VM.  It appears to be inspecting the directories in the /opt/vmware/www/build directory to validate that profiles exist for each build.  The problem is it seems that each time, the last vm being setup for a build has a directory, but the profile.xml has not yet been copied and bombs out with the following error...

"Profile not specified for build instance "<vm name.no>"

This almost always occurs on the last vm being created, but sometimes on the second to last.  It appears as though I was able to find a workaround by modifying the metabuilder file and adding a time.sleep(10) after the process fork occurred...However, for obvious reasons I am not happy with this workaround.

My question is this...Has anyone else seen this behavior?  If so, does anyone have a better solution?

Thanks,

Mike

Re: Is there a way to generate a linux vm appliance with filesystem ext4?

I was able to add the ext4 selection to the gui for the vms and have studio build ext4 file systems for linux, but it was a bit of a hack.  Unfortunately I did it a while back and this is what I can remember from memory:

1. Modify /opt/vmware/etc/build/schemas/vadk.xsd

     - under the <xs:simpleType name="fstypes"> add an enumeration for ext4.  (easy to find doing a search for ext3)

2. Within the build template, a couple of files need to be modified (I recommend using a copying a profile using the newos feature on the command line for this....I used the default RHEL 64bit profile that came with studio)

     - modify /opt/vmware/etc/build/templates/<your template>/commontask.xsl: Search for all blocks containing "ext3" and make identical entries but change all ext3 to ext4.  I believe there are 3 blocks requiring this change (make_mountpoint_or_swap_lvm() function, make_mountpoint_or_swap_nolvm() function, and xml tag <when test="@vadk:fs = 'ext3'">.

     -  additionally I modified /opt/vmware/etc/build/templates/<your template>/build_profile.xml but this may not have been required.  In this file I changed the partion fs from ext3 to ext4.  I now believe I could have done this from the gui after the changes above.

3. A reboot of the studio appliance may be required for the GUI to pick up the changes to the above files.

Hope this helps others.

hey

What is luck if you can only start esxi and not run any guest system?

i know there is unsupported hardware

but it is strange that vmware it self can run fine on the raid volume but it can nog create a datastore

do you know if there is a work around in this kind of situations

i have a full supportet mainboard but it is useless with single disks

and i try to use this hardware becouse it is expensive to buy a other PCI raid controller (bad enough i have only a pci-E slot that i can use for a graphic card)

Hi,

I had a hard drive go down on me and I lost all my stuff. This time when I attempt to install Windows 8 as an ISO Image within VMWARE 8.03 it fails. The message says The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click "OK: to restart the computer, and the restart the installation.

When I follow the directions, I come back to the same error message dialogue box thats titled "Install Windows"

If anyone has encountered this, I'd sure appreciate a fix if there is one.

Thank you in advance.

Regards,

Lawrence

From what you're saying it looks like this is a software RAID device (aka fake RAID).  If it is similar to the Intel ICH*R family of controllers, one requires a software driver to provide full RAID functionality, even though one configured a "RAID" array within the systems BIOS.

The drivers that come with ESXi don't support software RAID hence the best you'll get is ESXi recognizing the individual disks.

am looking at re-installing ESXi 5.0 (free) released Dec 2011 to fix this problem, then applying patches one at a time (from http://www.vmware.com/patchmgr/findPatch.portal) up to but NOT including the one that breaks auto start.

There is a patch that's part of update 1 I absolutely need (KB 2010817). Can one "cherry pick" the patches (from update 1 and later) in a such as way as to avoid the code that breaks auto start but get the other stuff? I don't see a way to do that at the "Download Patches" portal.

I can confirm 8111DL works out of box on ESXi 5u1. I hate those people just saying no because it's not on HCL..... Most people don't need to spend $1000 on a lab if they can get the job done with $200

vlan double tagging/802.1QinQ

$

Hi,

I have some vswitches with VLAN 4096, which pass VLAN tagged traffic between VMs. There are several of these using VLAN tags independently, that don't talk to each other. These vswitches currently have no physical interface associated with them. I'd like to be able to connect VMs from different ESX hosts to each of these vswitches (ideally using a dvswitch), but have the VLAN tags preserved, without traffic from vswitch1 leaking into vswitch2. The normal way to do this is 802.1QinQ, or VLAN double tagging.

Is it possible to do this in ESX/VCenter? Is there an alternative, or third party solution?

Thanks!

Hi scotprince,

When you Get Info on the source media, the disc's volume label is shown under Name & Extension, as well as in two places near the top of the Get Info panel.  It'll probably be a horrid bunch of letters and/or numbers like "GRMCENXVOL_EN_DVD".

In the VM's settings, under CD/DVD, there's an Enable CD/DVD Drive slide-switch that you have to set to "ON" to effectively "put the disc into the drive".  Is that ON?  If not, try switching it on and restarting the VM.  If it is already "ON" and it still doesn't work, we should look some more into the origin of the disc image that you are using to figure out whether it's actually valid source media for installation.

Hope this helps,

Thank you very much for your help that did it.  I see where I tripped up.  When I download vmplayer I did not scroll down far enough to notice that there were other files listed besides the vmplayer application.  With the other programs, it seems that the VIX API files were listed in the tools tab.
