Re: Resuming Paused VM results in "The file specified is not a virtual disk"

RemoteXP.vmdk is / was a monolithicSparse.vmdk - which following the logs was in a state so that WS did not accept it as a healthy vmdk.
With monolithicSparse this also means the embedded header of the file is damaged.
This again also means that all signature-based recovery-tools will not detect this as a valid vmdk of type "monolithicSparse"
So your situation is as follows: what ever your recovery attempts may have produced as a result : it is very likely meaning less.
If this is really valuable data then I hope you used a LiveCD for your recovery attempts and did not run them from the affected volume !!!
Anyway - let me have a look - I maybe able to locate the file in your recovery results by using other serach criteria.
To get an idea about the reliabilty of your scans - please specify the tools you used.
Before you give up - call me - see signature

Treat the files inside the WS-installation directory like parts of the hosts operating system.
Dont change the default path unless you really have a good reason.
For performance tuning spread host OS and VMs over two disks.
If you have several VMs also try to spread the VMs over as many disks/spindles as you have / can afford.

I am agree there are some serious limiations of spoof guard in vCNS, not posssible to approve secondary addresses

The virtual mainboard without your harddisk starts at 20. May.2011
If it does not work with your virtual harddisk you can deduce that something inside your guestOS itself is responsible.
While troubleshooting this further - lets always use a VM that is powered off completely - lets discuss resuming once we got control of the easier base case.

I'm not clear what you mean. VSAN works with vSphere Replication and as outlined above the placeholder datastore can be placed on VSAN.

Answers in RED:

If I am going to implement VSAN with SRM, the only replication that I can use is vsphere replication since SRA will work if I have an external storage for another external storage replication? - correct, if you are using VSAN you have to use VM level replication as there is no SRA for VSAN

So if they need a near 0 RPO, VMs they need to protect should be in the external storage instead on the vSAN datastore and SRA will be used? - If you need less than 5 min RPO you would want to look at either array-based replication that supports a lower RPO or a solution like RecoverPoint For VMs from EMC which provides a lower RPO. Note that RP4VM doesn't integrate with SRM.

Do I need SRA if my placeholder datastore is an EMC storage? - You need an SRA if you are using array-based replication. If you are using vSphere Replication, regardless of where the placeholder datastore is located an SRA is not required/needed/used.

Is there any writeups or procedures where I can use the vSAN datastore as place holder datastore? I beleiev in one of my previous posts that it is doable, just create a folder or a part to be the place holder datastore, - See your previous post and the responses for details

Re: live running VM vmotion across vcenter

If hosts vMotion VMkernel interfaces are on different subnets you will need to configure the default gateway on VMkernel to vMotion network be able to communicate between source and destination hosts... there is no vSphere related question here, it is a basic network issue. Two devices cannot communicate if they are on different subnets and don't have a default gateway address to route between the networks.

Anyway, if your virtual machine network is not stretched, not make sense the vMotion between vCenter, cause it will loose network connectivity and you will need to assign a new IP address on destination network.

A specific parameter was not correct. Spec.options.changeSID

Hi,

I cloned a Win 2008 R2 VM with guest customization guide, and deselected the change SID option, the following error message threw out, and the new VM failed to power on..

,A specific parameter was not correct. Spec.options.changeSID.

However if i selected the change SID option, the guest customization would be successful.

What is the issue ?

Hi,

I found i can mount the same ISO file to 8 VM's virtual CD-ROM at the same time, but failed with the ninth VM. Is there any limitation about it ?

Thank you.

Hi,

Is it possible create Oracle RAC on NFS datastore ?   With VMFS datastore, we can use VMDK files as the Oracle RAC shared virtual disks with the Paravirtual SCSI controller and multi-writer function, how about NFS datastore ? is the Paravirtual SCSI controller and multi-writer function supported on NFS datastore ?

it seems to be different with the other appliance, with run level 1 it boots into "rescure mode" and asks you for root passwd before

thx

Will Horizon Daas be upgraded to version 7, eventually as well?

Can't Enable Sharing / "Failed to configure the Workstation Server"

Everything was fine until I made the mistake of upgrading to 12.1.1 build-3770994 from 12.0(?)

For some reason sharing became disabled after the upgrade.

I can't enable sharing, I get "Failed to configure the Workstation Server"

Seems everytime I upgrade VMWare Workstation something breaks

I had to moce the shared VMs to "normal" VMs so I could run them.

I've repaired, uninstalled and reinstalled and still have the same failure.

how can i separate my vsan VMs and my placeholder datastore if I'm using one VSAN disk pool?

From my understanding, VSAN pools all disks into one datastore.

Deploy OVF/OVA seems hosed-up with Host Client ESXi 6 U2

$

I was recently going through the steps of qualifying the HTML 5 Host-Client for ESXi 6 U2 and ran into trouble with deploying OVF/OFA's

  • First, I tried to deploy a Scientific Linux OVA, and the browser simply crapped-out (Chrome: "Aw-snap")
  • Then I tried to deploy the same VM as an OVF, whereupon the Host Client errored out saying that I needed to specify a VMDK?
  • Lastly I tried to deploy a Windows OVA and, after selecting the OVA, the Host Client has been sitting on the step: Select Storage > "Extracting OVA" for 10 minutes now! In the C# client, this OVA takes less than 5 minutes to deploy!

Has anyone else experienced these problems? Since the C# Client is apparently going away, is the Host Client actually ready for prime-time?

Perhaps the cluster names are just the same but are not actually the same entity?

As mentioned, screenshots of both vCenters would help.

When you try to manually start the service, what does it say?

Also check the Windows Event Viewer logs after the that to see whether it reports any issues with the service, or any dependencies.

Datastore Used Space (%) Distribution Report and View

Hi,

I have been searching for information about the metric used on this report and what we get out of the report itself but in more of the enviroments I always see 0% results for all the datastores.

Can someone give me a hint on this?

Thanks!
